Primal's PE project takes off - SPORE SWAB CONTEST NOW OPEN!!!
#18369874 - 06/04/13 08:52 PM (10 years, 8 months ago) |
|
|
Well hey, it's that time of year, or anyway it's a time of year when I'm actually growing some shit again, so enjoy!
I inoculated a bunch of rye jars at the beginning of April with PE and Chitwan (a freebie) syringes, but only a couple of the PE jars survived. However, survive they did, and they went to make two bulk minitubs last month and both of them are about ready to fruit:

These plates got a grain or two of rye each about 2 weeks ago from one of the two PE MS quarts above. I'm impressed with how this stuff looks considering it's just one transfer off MS innoc, so I may have to readjust my thinking a bit - spore germination from the same syringe hasn't produced anything to compare. The plates have been at room temp which has been about 65F, and holy mama of god, that's some beautiful myc. The first one the grain slipped around a bit which is why there's traces growing on the other side.
The most interesting sectors are going to new plates, and the rest is destined for these 12 jars, which with luck will make 12 new minitubs in little more than a week.
That's all for now but I'm sure there'll be a lot more penile goodness coming.
6-16
First unmistakeable pins:

6-19
Hey, here comes fun!
And from tub 2, they look like blobs to me...

Ooh, extra bonus pins (Chitwan):

6-21 Happy Solstice
Hmmm....
Not quite what I'm hoping for. I think there's a problem of some sort with the substrate. Oh well, more on the way.
Meanwhile the Chitwans are getting a leg up

6-22
A little better. I think I had the bulk below field capacity, as the more I mist them the better they're doing. Still, almost a fail compared to previous grows so far. Maybe the 2nd flush will redeem them, plenty of pins on that sub. I'm running some trials with Violet's Seed Tek to streamline future cultivation and aid the Potency Project research.
Anyway... Tub 1 has some nice fruits, tub 2's blobs are swelling and contained some pins:
Meanwhile, the Chitwan's are putting their foot down

6-23
Getting closer and getting lots bigger. Tripping soon, I think.

Looks like the PEs are beating the Chitwans for mass. Don't like the brown spots but I had to mist these tubs heavily and often to get the water content up, user error.
6-24
OMG, being overrun by PE magnificentness - and they just keep growing.
And the Chitwans, they look puny by comparison...

6-25 HARVEST TIME
Oh. My. God.
Gimli's feeling dwarfed, standing in this mushroom forest of penises. Is it time to put the axe to them??

Harvesting... Holy crap! The 2nd one I picked - a LITTLE one - is 60 gms.

A rogue's gallery:
OK everybody smile now:

660 gms, not bad.
6-26
It continues. Tub 2:

Harvest time... Are they trying to tell me something here?
830 gms.

Nice looking cultures.
Just so you know though, any time you put a grain to agar, it's going to go crazy and run like that. Hard to judge a strain by its colonization ability esp in that situation

Really? Never saw that before, though yeah, it's starved and looking for more of the same stuff. The tubs have been running well too, so no worry there.

The nice thing about grain to agar is it's very obvious sectoring usually right from the start.

Yeah, this is gonna be fun to isolate. Gotta make some more plates today so I can maximize the spread.
So, it's using the grain kernel to drive the growth??

I won't pretend I know exactly why the myc runs after moving from a grain to agar. But I can speculate that since the agar is lower-nutrition than the grain, it's probably just speeding along to find more food.

I make the agar a little low on nutes anyway to encourage that, based on something RR said.
In the past I've always gone from prints to agar so starting PE from MS led to the grain approach. What's really interesting here to me is that none of the syringe-agar inocs I did at the same time have produced anything similar. Since you get countless separate germinations with MS, and they all compete in the grain, I wonder if there's a selection for vigor involved here?

6-25 HARVEST TIME
Oh. My. God.
Gimli's feeling dwarfed, standing in this mushroom forest of penises. Is it time to put the axe to them??

OK...but keep in mind these fruits were from a MS innoc on grain quarts, spawned 1:4 on bulk coir/verm/gypsum/coffee. The plates came from a couple of grains before I spawned them. I'm not sure I could isolate a strain that did better then these puppies.

Oh yeah, swabs will go forward as B_Boy has already claimed one.
So using my tea recipe I've reduced 300 gms of fresh PEs down to about 280 cc of concentrated tea. And I just did 22 gms of the harvest, and it's only been a few minutes but holy shit...

There will be plenty of swabs, I'm just trying to figure out a proper context for the contest...
So I've tried the product. I'm speechless. There's some sort of post I have to make in some other forum about godstuff and then there's these pictures I took that go along with that.
But damn it's good. And I've got a fucking shitload of it from the first flush alone.
Ah well, as problems go I'm liking that.

The Chitwan was about 340 gm fresh weight. It died of contams shortly after. RIP. I have some more of it getting ready to fruit but based on the EXTREME POTENCY AND HUGE YIELD OF THE PE I'm kind of ignoring it.
Today I did 50g (fresh weight as tea) of the PE, after 20 and then 30 late last week. OMG. Intense visuals, absolutely in the sun. It's my new instant favorite.

Primal's PE project takes off - SPORE SWAB CONTEST NOW OPEN!!! [Re: AlfredHitchcock]
#18504921 - 07/02/13 11:39 PM (10 years, 7 months ago) |
|
|
Well, say no more. I've got 18 swabs to give away, taken from the two largest fruits (keeping 2 for my own stock in the fridge, and I streaked a couple of plates to test).
Contest is here.
B_BOY already gets one thanks to quick PM work, but the other 17 are up for grabs.
2nd flush comes in soon I hope, and I'll make more swabs if I run out. The biggest fruits actually dropped a dusting of spores, and they were pretty rich for swabbing.
So let the fun begin!

Am I discerning this correctly in that your PE here is stronger than your experiences with PEU were?
Oh no, good call. I haven't been laid out catatonic by the PE (yet).
Weight for weight at maturity they're pretty evenly matched, I suspect. The bulk harvest on the PE well exceeded the PEU, and the fruits matured much more successfully - with the PEU they got soft just after max cap size - so I probably picked them earlier - which made them very much on the strong side, but with less absolute actives for the grow. So if you factor that in, the production of alkaloids by these exceeds anything else I've grown, for materials invested. And of course, dig the size - a trip per fruit even with tolerance.

I can't participate in the contest for 60 more days =(
Sorry... I'll grow more though. Maybe have another giveaway.
Those are compostable bags made of corn. I use liners in the minitubs to aid in GE control, make it easier to clean up, and avoid side pinning.

Well hey, a little update on all the spore swabs ready to go out...
Tested a swab on two plates back on 7-1. Thought it was only gonna give bacteria for quite a while. But now, 7-23, check it out:

Those should work.
