Primal's PE project takes off - SPORE SWAB CONTEST NOW OPEN!!!

Well hey, it's that time of year, or anyway it's a time of year when I'm actually growing some shit again, so enjoy!
I inoculated a bunch of rye jars at the beginning of April with PE and Chitwan (a freebie) syringes, but only a couple of the PE jars survived. However, survive they did, and they went to make two bulk minitubs last month and both of them are about ready to fruit:

These plates got a grain or two of rye each about 2 weeks ago from one of the two PE MS quarts above. I'm impressed with how this stuff looks considering it's just one transfer off MS innoc, so I may have to readjust my thinking a bit - spore germination from the same syringe hasn't produced anything to compare. The plates have been at room temp which has been about 65F, and holy mama of god, that's some beautiful myc. The first one the grain slipped around a bit which is why there's traces growing on the other side.
The most interesting sectors are going to new plates, and the rest is destined for these 12 jars, which with luck will make 12 new minitubs in little more than a week.
That's all for now but I'm sure there'll be a lot more penile goodness coming.
6-16
First unmistakeable pins:

6-19
Hey, here comes fun!
And from tub 2, they look like blobs to me...

Ooh, extra bonus pins (Chitwan):

6-21 Happy Solstice
Hmmm....
Not quite what I'm hoping for. I think there's a problem of some sort with the substrate. Oh well, more on the way.
Meanwhile the Chitwans are getting a leg up

6-22
A little better. I think I had the bulk below field capacity, as the more I mist them the better they're doing. Still, almost a fail compared to previous grows so far. Maybe the 2nd flush will redeem them, plenty of pins on that sub. I'm running some trials with Violet's Seed Tek to streamline future cultivation and aid the Potency Project research.
Anyway... Tub 1 has some nice fruits, tub 2's blobs are swelling and contained some pins:
Meanwhile, the Chitwan's are putting their foot down

6-23
Getting closer and getting lots bigger. Tripping soon, I think.

Looks like the PEs are beating the Chitwans for mass. Don't like the brown spots but I had to mist these tubs heavily and often to get the water content up, user error.
6-24
OMG, being overrun by PE magnificentness - and they just keep growing.
And the Chitwans, they look puny by comparison...

6-25 HARVEST TIME
Oh. My. God.
Gimli's feeling dwarfed, standing in this mushroom forest of penises. Is it time to put the axe to them??

Harvesting... Holy crap! The 2nd one I picked - a LITTLE one - is 60 gms.

A rogue's gallery:
OK everybody smile now:

660 gms, not bad.
6-26
It continues. Tub 2:

Harvest time... Are they trying to tell me something here?
830 gms.

Nice looking cultures.
Just so you know though, any time you put a grain to agar, it's going to go crazy and run like that. Hard to judge a strain by its colonization ability esp in that situation

Sweet!
I'll be doing something similar: PE syr -> Agar -> Grain -> Mini mono
Good luck!

Really? Never saw that before, though yeah, it's starved and looking for more of the same stuff. The tubs have been running well too, so no worry there.

The nice thing about grain to agar is it's very obvious sectoring usually right from the start.

Yeah, this is gonna be fun to isolate. Gotta make some more plates today so I can maximize the spread.
So, it's using the grain kernel to drive the growth??

I won't pretend I know exactly why the myc runs after moving from a grain to agar. But I can speculate that since the agar is lower-nutrition than the grain, it's probably just speeding along to find more food.

I make the agar a little low on nutes anyway to encourage that, based on something RR said.
In the past I've always gone from prints to agar so starting PE from MS led to the grain approach. What's really interesting here to me is that none of the syringe-agar inocs I did at the same time have produced anything similar. Since you get countless separate germinations with MS, and they all compete in the grain, I wonder if there's a selection for vigor involved here?

So here go the 2 minitubs into the FC after 3 weeks, about a week in consolidation. And the next day, interesting close up on the fastest (left pic) one...
