Is this Trich? Is this Agar? **It's Penicillium!**

Is this Trich? Or Penicillin? Or something...worse?! Worry not, I have already made safe transfers away.

Anyways, while I'm here, might as well show some cool Agar porn. Most of these are transfers.. from a Penis Envy spore syringe -> Agar -> an indeterminate amount of transfers -> this:
This baby took four days to become like this:

Took three sections off this guy:

And turned out these guys. Can you guess which plate is from which section? Btw, I know there is contam. That's why there's plenty more plates.

I don't know if you can make this out, but the mycelium is growing up in the air over a possible contaminant. Sick. As. Fuck.

Couple days back I cut a bacterial contaminated section of a petri and I put it on a new petri as "trash". 24 hours later I fucked up an agar transfer to another petri.. so I decided to put it in the "trash" petri. Here is its progression: Edit: This dish has pinned!

Let's hope some of these babies can fruit!
cheers all

Nice agar shots OP!
Penicillin are the antibiotics that come from Penicillium, thats what it looks like to me but I can't be certain.

that does look like aspergillus penicillium, maybe cross refrence that in the contam forum(i think tmethyl has a shot of it too)

Oooh, lol. That's why Google images weren't helping much.. too many pics of pills and not of petris!
I think it is aspergillus penicillium.

So this strain has almost completely taken over all contams on the plate. When mycelium has done this, does this alter its fruiting ability/genetics/chemical make-up?
I think I'm gonna put this in a couple jars and try and fruit it... I don't know if much will differ from a plate that didn't have to fight to survive

It's green It's literally impossible to identify a mold without a microscope and considering it's on agar there's not even much basis for a good guess.

You can ID trich easy enough- eats everything, including your mycelium, moves fast, white, bubbly, etc.
OP, out of curiousity whats your agar recipe?

Frank, I use Malt Extract Agar. My first Agar run, I used 50g for 1 liter, however I noticed that more MEA per liter of water tends to make the mycelium cottony and spread out slower.
So the plates you see in the OP, I used less MEA to see how it changes mycelial growth... I used about ~35-40g per liter, err on the lower side.
Using this less recipe, I believe, is what allowed one of the plates to grow so fast in just 4 days!

That'll do it. I was just curious, I was banking on it being a low-nute agar.
I just use the standard formula, 50g -> 1L. I don't really try to get my strains to "run" before they hit the grains though.

I see. Well as long as you're using the same formula every time for all strains.. that will set up a good standard to see which one performs the best.
I think I might stick around 40g per liter, just cause I like to stare at my plates and pretend I can see them growing.

Yeah, definitely man.
I just have so much going all at once on such a regular basis that I don't mind an extra couple days for a full plate. I like to see them go crazy when they hit the grains

You use ~35 g of malt per 1000 ml 3,5 g per 100 ml
and how much agar do you use per 1000 ml ?
I tend to get thin cottony non rhyzomorphic mycelium on my agar all the time...
Would trying out your agar recipe improve my mycelium growth?

No, he uses 35-40g malt extract agar (MEA) to 1000mL. Already mixed, I would imagine.

Thx
so thats 50/50 mix of agar and malt?
18 g of malt and 18 g of agar to 1000 ml of water?

I use this exactly: http://fungi.com/product-detail/product/enriched-malt-extract-agar-1-pound.html
Seems a lot easier than running around trying to get all the ingredients, if you got the money to afford less hassle.
Also, I don't use a full liter of water for my dishes... I try to pour 25 dishes at one time, but I find 1 liter of water is unnecessary for that amount. My plates get these thick layers of agar, and when transferring sections off, sometimes its so thick it touches the petri cover. I use approximately 800mL of water with about ~35g of MEA.
But I haven't done much Agar work.. this is only my third Agar cook/pour.
Hope any of that helps.
