outdoor advice needed
    #18363294 - 06/03/13 04:07 PM (11 years, 7 months ago)

So after about 9 hours of reading old outdoor post and write up's there are a few things I'm still not sure of.

I was going to dig 6 inches in the ground, then lay H-poo mixed with earth worm castings down. I was going to soak it with water for a good week or two then break my wbs jars up and sprinkle on top then add a few inches of soaked straw over the bed.

Now at this point, I'm not sure how long it will take to colonize with the H-poo/castings and I'm also still not sure how often I should soak the bed with the hose.

Can anyone give me some good pointers on these issues?

Much thanks,PMC

Depends a lot on your areas temperatures.

Its hard to over-water outdoor beds, but easy to under-water them.

Mulch on top , such as leaf debris can help with moisture loss. The more spawn you hit the bed with the faster it will colonize, but you have to be careful not to have so much grain that critters will dig up the bed. Screening or caging can help with this.

Thanks for the tip. I was thinking of some kind of netting. I'm using freash hourse poo not store bag poo. Is there anything I need to worry about when using freash hourse poo and earth worm castings?

If you don't pasteurize the horse poo well , expect competitor species such as inky cap/corpinus. Horse poo is often chalk full of coprinus spores. They are more of a nuicance than a project killer.

I did not know of this. So is it better to go to lowes and buy manure in a bag?

Nah, horse poo is cadilac.

Go for it.

I would still pasteurize for 2 hours at 155 - 160 F, just to be sure.

Good luck.

ok, so let my lay my plan down and tell me if it souds like a solid plan.

I'm going to dig a bed about 6 inches in the ground and remove the top half. I'm then going to fill in the area with about 2 inches of h-poo and soak with water. I'm then going to break my colonized wbs all over the h-poo then add about another inch or two of h-poo then cover with a inch or  two of soaked straw. I then place the bird netting up around the bed to keep critters out and water about once a day and wait.

Does that sound about right?

As said, you do not need or even want to pasteurize manure for an outdoor grow. If you're in a really hot sunny climate, try laying a flattened out piece of cardboard over the patch for the first few weeks.
RR

it's just not needed or wanted and is easily taken over by other things you don't want when pasturized, we get away with it indoors because the mold spores are just spores and don't germinate easily on manure, howeveroutdoors everything is already germintaed(molds)and pasturized subs are easy pickings for it, but coir should be pasturized because it makes it easier for the mycelium to digest

I was just saying if you have horse manure , use it, no need to buy bagged store-bought.

I pasteurize my horse manure , specifically to stave off competitor species like coprinus, that take over my beds when I don't , but that's just me. I wasn't saying pasteurization is necessary, just helpful in my experience.

My main point was horse manure is good.

I guess not everyone gets competitor species the way we do in the PNW.

Out of curiosity... What are the dangers of pasteurizing manure for outdoor beds Cronicr ?

just  easily taken by competitors but for the most part it's not a huge deal, even the coprinus won't hurt anything and are easily taken over i actually had left some unpaturized manure indoors and had them wall to wall just a few days agao lol). i couldn't really vouch for much toough as i have never pasturied anything for outdoors because rr said not too.

so this is the tek I was looking at http://www.shroomery.org/8494/Moes-Outdoor-Growing-Tek but seems like way to much. can't I just lay soaked straw down then a layed of poo then the spawn then cover with another layed of poo then water real good and cover with soaked straw for 2-3 weeks then when colonized remove the straw then water and cover with a clear plastic tarp with holes stabed in it for FE and GE and wait for the first flush??

I'm not understanding why the tek above has so many layers like a taco dip. Can I get a ruling/advice on this?

Thanks

Layering is the old school method.
I'd mix it all up then put your wet straw on top to act as a buffer.

That's what I was thinking, just like a mono tub. So just mix the horse poo with the spawn, cover with soaked straw until colonized then remove the straw and cover with a clear tarp...

The tarp is to keep it nice and humid along with fighting off damn birds and such.
