I am making a casing layer and i want to use the 60/40 verm coco core mix but i can't find coco core anywhere. are there any other simple casing recipe or can i just use verm alone. aka by itself?

You can forget trying to find coir for a casing layer then because you want peat moss not coir for casing material.

peat moss is standard, yeah. I've only attempted casing 3 or 4 times with some left over bulk coir/verm....one of the most full consistent flushes i have had

dont bother with a casing layer if your growing cubes its not needed.

use coir as a bulk substrate, and try not use casing own its own, its not a word and can confuse people. it was used commenly a while ago to incorectly describe bulk substrate in trays and people would get confused thinking it was a substrate with a casing layer.

If your growing off straight grain then yes go ahead and case it.  Necessary?.....no.  Beneficial?.....hells yes.

Does it make me a bad person if I say I just go grab a big bag of organic jiffy mix, hydrate to field capacity and pasteurize it for all of my casings?

Update: so I cased it with peat moss and verm. 50/50 mix. Then I took a part of a plastic heavy duty trash bag and covered around the jar just to cover the mycelium up to the casing. That light you are seeing is a 6500 daylight. And yes I have it sitting in water.

And the last pic is of the temp, and the humidity in my chamber.

Ok so I finely getting my first pin! But then that's where I have a question. As you can see in my first pic of my jar. The third pic in. Shows mycelium growth a long the side. Well it stopped. So a couple days after I cased it i thought I saw cobweb growing. So I did a Hydrogen peroxide water mix to knock it back which I think I did. Because I don't seeing anything that looks like cobweb any more. Ok so I guess my question is... How does everything looking? What do y'all think? And I am not seeing any other pins yet. And I got the first pin four days ago.

So thing I thought I'd add. My light is a 6500 daylight. I have it  on a 12/12 hour cycle. I also have the window blines open during the day where I get some really good sun. Temp stays between 72-78F and 88-98% humidity.  So again if you have any suggestions I'm all for it. Thank you~~~

The black plastic on the outside was probably a waste of time. It should be on the inside of the jar to prevent side pinning. Most people tape off the outside thinking that blocking the light will stop side pinning but that's not the main pinning trigger. Pinning is mainly caused by FAE and evaporation off the surface. The black plastic is used INSIDE because it sticks to the sub when it shrinks. When there is a small gap between the tub and the sub you get a nice little microclimate that will cause all kinds of side pinning.

Did you just use straight peat and verm or did you add hydrated lime and gypsum for a ph buffer? I'm not the most experienced with casing layers but I know that could be a cause for contams.

How's your FAE? Do you fan regulary because your FC looks like it will build up a lot of stale air since it doesn't have that many holes. That could be another cause for the pin to stall. The peroxide spray also could have stalled that pin. It doesn't kill mycelium but it sure can set it back a little.

If it were me, I would try and find some perlite to put on the bottom and drill some holes in the other sides and bottom.  As is, I would get a fan setup in the room to help move around air.

Just mist a couple times a day and make sure you fan really well afterwords.

thats a nifty looking temp and humidity gauge, and one that looks like it could possibly actually work? get an analogue gauge, calibrate it and stick it next to the digi gauge.

I should have mentioned in my previous post that if you want to fruit straight grains you can also mix 50/50 with hydrated vermiculite. This will provide the nessesary moisture required for fruiting (rez effect)

On my fae. I have a ceiling fan and HEPA filter air cleaner blowing right on it.  This jar and how I'm fruiting it is all in fun. I know thing I'm doing right. The outside plastic was just to see if it would help or make a difference. And on my casing.. No I just use verm and peat. Ummmm. Oh I should tell you the main reason why i did it like this. In the Beginning I had one grain that had contam and the mycelium took it over. So I didn't take it out the jar and bulk or case it any other way because of fear of spreading the contam.

How about bottom-watering for moisture instead of using & colonizing costly vermiculite? Rhetorical question.
Adding a moisture-holding material and having the mycelia colonize it with grain's nutrition is less optimal than bottom-watering and only makes sense when you can't/won't bottom-water.
