Monster mushroom!!!
    #1836028 - 08/21/03 03:35 AM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Ok, finally I got this beast into the computer. I had to use my newly purchased digital camera (canon 10D, magnificent!!!) to take a picture of my real paper photo of this mushroom!
I have no idea what this one is, but it's huge, nasty and... nasty! The lens cap in the background is about 2 inches across. It was growing off a dead log in New Zealand on the south of North Island.
Any takers?

Looks like a type of Gyromitra to me. Very cool looking though whatever it is.

Nasty? As in going bad?

It looks like a false morel of some sort. No false morels should ever be eaten, and if it's going bad that's one more reason not to eat it. Hopefully you weren't thinking about eatint it anyway.

Weird looking thing, though.

Happy mushrooming!

Nasty as in ugly and gross!!! Wouldn't put that anywhere close to my mouth even if it was considered delicious.

Did you 'get your fingers in there' to see if it could have been more than one fruit body?
Could it have been a cluster of wood ear, Auricularia auicula, that is trying to take over the world?
I found found a big distendend contorted wood ear, that looked not unlike that, in Nelson about a month ago.
Otherwise Im with ToxicMan on the Gyromitra or Helvella

nah, didn't "get my fingers in there". Prefer the real thing... heh   Besides, it would probably just bite my hand off.
