My pal didn't bother with using the reefer (ha ha!) to cold shock his cakes and he did ok. But, that was before he read all the good advice here. Why don't you try a little experiment: Put one of each type in the reefer for a day and leave the other out. Then do the birthday, and keep track of your results. Report back to your fellows here, I'm sure we'd enjoy hearing all about it. Good luck,

Wait until your casing layer has completely colonized in the dark before cold shocking and starting the 12 on 12 off light cycle. You don't want to try to initiate fruiting until your casing has colonized, and your mushrooms are ready to start fruiting.

Is the refridgerator an acceptable means of "cold-shocking"? Could one put a casing tray in the fridge for a couple hours to initiate pinning, or would that be too cold?

I have heard of this method used many times. As I recall, cased substrate can be left in the fridge overnight without harm, but a few hours should be enough.

I have just put tinfoil over my container and put in frige for 8-20 hours with good results. I noticed no difference between the casing that was in for 8 hours and the one that was in for 20.

So, using the fridge as a means of cold-shocking... at what point do you put the casing in the fridge? Immediately after you make the casing? Or, should you let the mycelium colonize the casing layer, and THEN try to initiate pinning in the fridge?
