For some reason I can go about only 10 days without overly drying them out. But, any longer is too long in my case.
Cubes are different I think because we mist them constantly which constantly rehydrates the perlite.
I can go the 4 weeks with just cubes.

I just thought of something:
Could we use a product called "Soil Moist" mixed with the perlite in the SGFC to help keep the perlite moist?
I think I may try for my next batch in a few weeks. This might get interesting or a complete fail. We'll see.

Excellent work here MacMerdin! I only accidentally ran into this thread by reading the comments that people left in your ratings, and one of the raters pointed me to this wonderful thread I'm glad that the thread is only 11 days old, so I could reply! For years people were saying that pans couldn't be grown PF style, and here is the proof that they can, with some modification.
Quote:
MacMerdin said: Both have worked but the Ziplock bowls have more surface area to fruit.
The Ziplock plastic containers could withstand being boiled for 1 to 2 hours? I'm surprised...
Quote:
a pinch of gypsum depending on how much substrate you have (for 4 cakes I use a nice sized pinch) 1 tablespoon used Duncan Donuts coffee
Where do you get your gypsum? For the coffee grounds, did you just go to the store and ask them for it? Did they ask why? I don't even know: can used coffee grounds be used in a garden? I'm thinking yes.
Quote:
Then, case the cake inside the jar/Ziplock with 50/50 + pasturized mix at a thickness of just enough to cover the mycelium and try to even it out as best as you can.
This is Verm/Peat with some form of lime? What kind of lime and how much? Can you get the lime at any gardening store? Where did you get yours? And how did you pasteurize it? What temp, how long, and what method?
Quote:
I then place them directly into the SGFC after casing.
How did you figure out how many and what size holes to drill into each side of your SGFC? That is something that I'm not very clear about.
Quote:
Here is the MacMerdin twist: I bury the jars/Ziplock bowls up to the top in the perlite. This does two things. Gives a nice moist atmosphere and fresher air at the surface of the perlite. I figured that how a SGFC chamber works is fresh air coming up through the bottom so I use this fresh air as my FAE source.
Smart!

I use a water dropper (child medicine dropper) to drip water on the casing layer to keep it moist. Just drop water until it starts to pool a little and then don't moisten until you see that it has dried a bit more. Usually 1 or 2 times a day is sufficient.
Another smart idea by MacMerdin.

This sounds like it would work, as long as the ratio of SoilMoist:Perlite is good. This might take a bit of experimentation. I'd keep it at least 75% perlite, because that is how it "breathes" and mists. Hell, 90% perlite might be even better.

They withstand being pc'd.
Quote:

I got mine from a home brewing store. Home Depot has it too. Ace hardware I think has it also. It's used in gardening so it's not that hard to find.
Quote:

I just use Duncan in my single cup coffee maker. I'm sure any would work.

My mother throws hers in her compost pile.
Quote:

Yes, 1 cup verm:1 cup peat with a pinch of lime. I used organic lime from the hardware store. It sucks because I have to grind it first. Get the powdered stuff.
Quote:

I filled a plastic cup with the casing mix and poured boiling water in it until it was saturated. Left it over night and drained the excess off. That's it.

It's standard.
1/4-inch holes every 2-inches on all six sides. 1 inch = 2.54 cm So 2 inches is about 5 cm.

I was thinking the same thing.
