Monkey Frog
    #1834751 - 08/20/03 08:41 PM (13 years, 10 months ago)

These interesting frogs can/could live in your garden, so this isnt off topic

So ok every knows about Bufo alvarius and its 5-meo.......but here is another interesting amphibian:Phyllomedusa bicolor

Quote:

Phyllomedusa bicolor secretions applied to self inflicted skin burns to produce an agonizing attack of diarrhea, vomiting, tachycardia and systemic collapse, that is followed by a state of hyper-acuity of the senses attended by abundant energy and stamina without need for food or drink. Among other components, it contains  dermorphin and deltorphin , peptides with analgesic properties 2000 times more potent than morphine at the cerebral level.

Now isnt that interesting

Thats taken from http://members.cox.net/toadvenom/bicolor.htm

Anyone else know anything about these??

Adam

shit! i thought you got yourself a phyllomedusa bicolor!
hah, this is a very interesting amphibian of south america...
yes, the mashcos (and many other) indians apply venom in self inflicted burns... i knew already of the effects, the people also report to feel very good even in the following days after the application (a crazy psychiatrist here in brazil is using minimal doses in his therapy... i doubt the little he uses would work).

good info on the compounds found in it! i've always wondered the real content of this distinguished amphibian!!! they look cute...
peace,

FH

The golden poison arrow frog, the most poisonous animal in the world. One two inch frog has enough poison to kill over 1,000 people.

2000 times more potent than morphine? Well call me Kermit! I wonder if anything usful could actually come from that.

The very nature of experience is ineffable; it transcends cognitive thought and intellectualized analysis. To be without experience is to be without an emotional knowledge of what the experience translates into. The desire for the understanding of what life is made of is the motivation that drives us all. Without it, in fear of the experiences what life can hold is among the greatest contradictions; to live in fear of death while not being alive.

Scientists are doing research. However, this extrememly potent mixture of akaloids is aquired, not genetic. Arrow poison frogs eat small insects, such as termites and ants. The more potent species eat more ants than the less potent ones (duh). In captivity, they "lose" their poison. I wonder what would happen if you fed a P. terribilis fire ants?

Cool, what you wrote imediately rang a bell inside my brain. I think Paul Simon wrote a song that mentions this frog:

SE?ORITA WITH A NECKLACE OF TEARS

(2nd couplet)
Nothing but good news
There is a frog in South America
Whose venom is a cure
For all the suffering that mankind
Must endure
More powerful than morphine
And soothing as the rain
A frog in South America
Has the antidote to pain
That's the way it's always been
And that's the way I like it

full song text:

just thought it might add to the thread

it's when you leave a couple sticks in the fire until they become incandescent and then quickly apply the hot ends on your shoulder for 2 wounds.
actually they are inflicted by someone else, usually...
