What Psilocybe Subaeruginosa is that? * 3
    #18341684 - 05/30/13 04:40 AM (7 years, 2 days ago)

Hi guys, I thought it might be nice to have a dedicated thread where we can share pictures of our unique Psilocybe Subaeruginosa finds.

As we know Psilocybe Subaeruginosa is an incredibly photogenic mushroom which comes in many shapes, sizes and colors and so I'd like this thread to focus on pictures demonstrating the different macroscopic qualities of various phenotypes of Psilocybe Subaeruginosa.

One off mutations/freak specimens need not be posted.

Additionally it'd be great if people could label contributions by state/territory to help paint a picture of how much these little beauties can vary between/within different states/territories of Australia. Yeah, Yeah, I know You NZ hunters can post too.

I look forward to some awesome Psilocybe Subaeruginosa shots and of course there will be a well deserved :mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2::mushroom2: for those kind enough to contribute. :bow2:

In opening. Here's a few different types I've come across on my hunts.

All pics taken in SA

This is a good presentation of the variable morphology of P. subaeruginosa, good
thread concept. Immediately I though pics five and six were a Cortinarius species
with those dark caps. Very special looking Psilocybes indeed!

Brilliant idea! I love how you acknowledge the fact that there are indeed mutated and freaky looking ones haha. So true.

I am a shitty photographer with an iphone, but here's a bunch.

Too much modesty mate you have some great pictures there! I absolutely love the subs you have in WA. I've never seen anything like them here in SA. Are they typical of the subs you find hunting? Do you have a panasonic lumix by chance? I just upgraded mine for a sony dsc rx100. DSLR quality pics in a compact cam

They are all variants of Psilocybe Subaeruginosa. I'm not sure what you mean by are they good to consume?

Indeed, a lot of different phenotypes, and yet they're all from SA, interesting!  The two above were my favorites, especially the leathery, caramel, wavey caps in the second shot. Did you find that the different phenotypes gave different types of trips?  I know that set and setting are important, but assuming you were in a comparable set and setting, did you find any differences between the phenotypes, or it was purely aesthetic?

Signeg, beautiful shots man.  Some of them, like the one shown, look a lot like azurescens, except for the lack of striations on the edge of the cap.  Are they in the same complex?  Anyway cool pics, thanks a lot for sharing them.  I liked your habitat shots showing the surrounding logs and ground, but an even larger perspective of what this area looks like would be even better

Possibly. I haven't bio-assayed any of them and don't intend to. I do know they can vary in potency from one specimen to the next. It wouldn't surprise me if some phenotypes were more potent than others. Anyone want to be my guinea pig:crazy2::grin:?

The caramel wavy cap darken with age

The bell cap sub is unable to open up at all without splitting the cap as pictured below.

Thanks ericos_bob and nobeginningnoend.:stoned:

All of those pictures are pretty much from the same area, so yeah there are lot's of different variation/phenotypes in the one location here, they are a beautiful mushroom. I'm not sure if they are one species but i think they might be. It's not uncommon for all the different looking phenotypes to be growing in one small area/patch.  P. subaeruginosa does come in some crazy shapes adn sizes IMO. Definitely can see some Psilocybe cyanescens in them though. We only know of one Psilocybe species here. Maybe some microscopy is needed...

The camera I'm using atm is a Kodak easyshare Z740 with 38mm-380mm(equivalent) lense.
Im hoping to get a Canon eos with a good macro lense, and I think i need a tripod. I've had a few set backs, car crash and stuff recently.

Your photo's are excellent quality for not being DSLR already bob. man

Its crazy how variable subs are! Sometimes they look like azurescens and sometimes like cyanescen. Or other times their own look. Out of anything I have done this year I am most excited for having P subaeruginosa planted in my yard here in BC so I can finally meet this mushroom in person one day!! Ever since PMOTW came out back in the day subs have always fascinated me!

I think the substrate plays a major role. In potency and shape characteristics.

Ones growing in the bush tend to have longer, thinner stems than in urban areas which are much shorter and thicker.
