Applying casing layer before full colonization

I have not been able to find a satisfactory answer to this question so I thought I'd ask you guys. After spawning straw with colonized grain, why is it necessary to wait until the surface of the straw is completely colonized before applying the casing layer? I can see no logical reason why casing before 100% colonization should cause any problems other than possibly uneven pinning. In fact, it seems to me that if one is using a non-nutritive casing layer, then the earlier you case the better because it will provide a buffer to keep out contams. Any thoughts?

some people do just as you say with success. some people stick it straight in the fruiting chamber (so long as the sides are opaque)
me, i like to see it happening. i'm very hands-on. but whatever butters your muffin, man!

If you are not concerned about an even pinset and the casing material is sterile, then my friend would say that you are correct.

It's faster then letting the mycelia colonize the substrate and casing layer, and as Shirley said you have the chance to see the action and assure that contams havn't kicked in before applying the casing.
