Huge Hygrophoropsis Aurantiaca Find
    #1830881 - 08/19/03 05:49 PM (20 years, 5 months ago)

Ok, I don't go out of my way to find mushrooms..but these found me.

I was helping a friend do some work over his grandmothers house.

When I got there, the front yard ASTOUNDED me, it was basically orange all over.

We picked something around 63-68lbs of these hygrophoropsis aurantiaca non-edible things.

Some of them were so "rooted" we literally had to pick up with two hands.  Biggest one was about 1' tall, and weighed over a pound.  Cap was about 8" in diameter, depending on how you measured.

I wish I had my camera with me, but we were throwing them away, so I didn't bother running home.

What a fucking site though.  She gets them weekly too.

This was in NE Ohio, after a last two weeks of hard rains, and now some high 80 temps with sun.  Surprising, the 80+ degrees and direct sunlight didn't bother them.

They actually pulled up CHUNKS of grass they were rooted so nicely.

I had only wished for the blue ones though.

Sounds more like you found a Jack-o-lattern Omphalotus illudens. They grow on wood or burried wood around tree trunks and stumps.

My guess would be Armillaria mellea: The Honey Mushroom

Nope, it's not Armillaria mellea, and it's not Jack O'Lantern.

Definately look like HA's, and are quite a bit different than Jack O'Lanterns.

These were growing mainly in a front yard, no where near any bark, mulch, etc.

The whole yard was orange
