Systems Idle Process?
    #1832632 - 08/20/03 09:55 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

What the fuck is it, and how do I stop it? Whenever I my computer starts to run slow I check my Windows process manager(WinXP) and it accounts for 99% of my CPU usage.

Make sure that you are running with the latest service pack. Click on start->control panel->system and look at the System information under the General tab. It should say Service Pack 1 in there somewhere. If you don't have it, go to windowsupdate.microsoft.com and get it... a large download, so be ready to wait a while.

If you are already running with SP1, lemme know and I will try to figure out what else would cause the problems... not having SP1 is the most common for your description.

System Idle Process is the percentage of CPU that is not being used.

If your computer has a high SIP percentage then it should be running nice and fast.

Your problem with sluggishness may well be reading/writing to your disk, not CPU.

How much memory and paging do you have?

It doesn't do anything, but you need it. I think your reading it completely wrong. Although System Idle Process may say its taking up 99% of your CPU. Look to the bottom of the Task manager. What is the CPU Usage? 1%? 0%? Its normal and you don't need to worry about it.

check out Task List to see what all those processes do (and see which you can disable).

hope that helps.

Silly me... I was thinking of the explorer bug eating up all of the idle system time that is normally fixed with SP1...
