mushrooms growing around casing layer?
    #1832540 - 08/20/03 09:01 AM (13 years, 10 months ago)

For some reason, there's a bunch of mushrooms growing from underneath my dog's casing layer, where it has shrunk away from the edge of the container. The casing layer is 50/50+, but he used dolomitic lime rather than hydrated lime.

There were a bunch of smaller mushrooms growing on this casing before, but they seemingly aborted at much smaller sizes, as per this picture

Is there any reason why the second flush seems to be growing around the casing layer?

This happens to many people. I think what's happening is that the crack is a more favorable microclimate for primordia formation. More humid and such. Substrate shrinkage is common during a decent first flush, but when it happens without much fruiting it's a sign of too much moisture loss [low rH, not enough misting]. One way or the other, once you have those gaps, it's tough to keep fruits from forming there. You can have success by patching the gaps with additional casing material [but not after fruits are forming]. The better strategy is to keep the moisture level up to par so the shrinkage doesn't occur before flushing.
At this point, I'd ride out at least the first of these fruits, then think about patching it up later. If you decide the casing needs more moisture, bring it up slowly. . .several misting cycles spread over time.

Thankx for the tip Suntzu. Same thing is happening to me on my first grow. Misting is all important, I guess. I'm using perlite and every morning when I take the lid off the platic underneath is totally covered in condensation, so I thought the humidity was too high! I'm misting once a day now and hope this don't happen w/me PESA's like it did on me B+'s. I was impatient w/my B+'s and actually ate 5 of the pins last night from down in the side that were growing all cockeye and shit to see if I could trip cause they'll probably abort anyway. They turned blue when I cut 'em, so I thought that was a good sign. Very weak effects, though. Patience is the key to cultivation, no? Maybe after this grow I will chill out and let things take their course! This site rules! Thanks everyone!
