have you ever been homeless? /ramifications
    #1832359 - 08/20/03 03:51 AM (19 years, 7 months ago)

I've never really not had a place to stay... I got kicked out of my dorm for smoking the dope 2 years ago (wow... I can't believe I've been in the uni for 2 years... this will be my 3rd... I certainly can believe that I'm still a sophmore.  and so I kinda bummed around from friends place to friends place. went traveling for awhile... (this might have something to do with me still being a sophmore..) I eventually just moved with a buddy when he lost a roommate. now, I had money the whole time since, you know, I had my own...erm... small business, you know.  so anyway, it wasn't like I went without, but I think that not having a home, a residence, really contributed to my downfall.  in the 8-9 months I lived by myself, I got addicted to all kind of drugs and lost probably 50 lbs (I was thin to begin with..).  anyway, I'm friends with some really rugged traveling rainbow family types, and they seem to make it kind of work, but at the same time it's like they really want a home.  I dunno, it's 5 in the morning and I've been up all night smoking pot, so I'm kinda rambling.

I got kicked out and had no where to stay for a while. I ended up sleeping in my car and then bought a plane ticket to california. I was staying with a friend and his grandma, and then she moved and we were somewhat homeless for a while, then had to stay in a cheap motel for a good bit. It wasnt really on the street or nothing, but we were in temporary places for 6 months waiting to find an appartment we could call home.

Home is a warm place that you feel safe and comfortable in, and until you are in your own home, anything can happen. Its hard to feel in control when you aint home ;]

If that's how you define homeless then by that definition I've been 'homeless' for the past couple of years now...moochin offa other people, sleeping on couches and floors and shit, etc, etc... It's been a while since I've had an actual 'home' in that context. I don't mind it so much seeing as I try to help out as much as I can with chores around the house and what have you, so the people I shack up with don't ever really consider me 'extra baggage' so to speak...and that makes things so so much easier. But I do definately miss that feeling of being able to really take care of myself. Constantly knowing that you're phisically not capable of completely standing on your own without any sort of outside assistance can put a real damper on a person's self-esteem. But hey, what're you gonna do, huh?

I've been homeless and it was the best year of my life! I had no bills, crashed at a different party every night and still held down a job! I wouldn't want to be homeless now that I'm older and it can be very damaging on teens. There are alot of "street families" around here and the "mom" and "pop" of one are now on trial for killing a devopmentaly disabled 26 yr old woman for saying another in the street coven came on to her sexually when he hadn't. Massed up stuff.

I was homeless for a couple months when I was nine, in fact, i had my ninth birthday in a hotel room. We were living in Tahoe and had no where to go, so we stayed in tons of motels and lived at a campground for a time. My mother, who was no doubt on many drugs (she has since stopped that) sent me to do the shopping for us. I have vivid memories of walking to the supermarket to buy some bread and milk... horrible times, definately not something i would want to go through again.

Then its usually all laughs and good times from there.

so I was helping my dad move stuff into this rented storage place (basically long rows of little garages) and I though: geez, I can remember a time when I would've loved to stay in one of these. and I bet there are alot of people right now who share the same sentiment. health codes, of course, would prevent people from living in them. why? why not allow really cheap housing to be made? it's better than sleeping outside, or raiding into apartment building closets.

Interesting idea.

Isn't that what most people consider the "projects"?

no, the projects aren't that bad, and the rent is still in the 100's. well, actually I don't know that for sure, I think there are different kinds of programs. whatever the case, it seems that the projects are big enough, since there are still homeless people. I'm talking about like 50 buck a month.

hey, I just remembered that I know about the projects, an ex gf of mine lives in one cause she has a child now (no... I'm not the daddy). she told me she pays hardly anything cause they base the rent on a proportion of her income, which is cose to nothing.

I agree that more HUD housing is needed. But the problem is noone wants it near them.

Would you? We're talking major property devaluation, increase in crime, etc.

There are many people out there that honestly need assistance, but then there are many more who are pschologically disturbed and could not lead a productive life if they wanted to.

Sticking those needy people in with the thugs and self abusers if just sentencing them to more misery. There must be a better solution.
