I'm thinking about getting a motorcycle UPDATED: Got it!

It's definitely going to be a crotch-rocket, nobody will talk me out of that .
With that in mind, what kind of bike should I be looking at for a beginner rider? I want to get something used, and definitely under $5000.

It definitely depends where you live, I assure you you need insurance in Ontario, and I'm sure the cost is really high.
The upside is that in my city parking for motorcycles is free everywhere!

i dont think you need a driving test with mortercycles though, just a written test, then you can jump on a bike right away and crash into whatever you want

You could probably find a used Kawasaki Ninja for under $5000, they made a shit ton of those things.
I'm too damn tall to want to ride a crotch rocket, but I always thought those looked ok.

Yep eventually I'm getting myself a Ninja 650R. One of the top 10 best bikes IMO. Especially for the price. OP, you can put 3k down on a new bike, and put that other 2k in a bank and use that to cover the next 10-15 months in payments.

Why would I do payments? I'm buying it outright. I firmly believe it is absolutely retarded to finance anything that depreciates such as any vehicle.

Yeah, you just put it on the sidewalk. Until quite recently in ON you didn't need insurance or a license for a moped, but that's no longer true.

Well where I'm from, you need a specific motorcycle drive test on top of your normal one, or in place of the normal one, not quite sure.

The written test gets you a learner's permit essentially. They couldn't really give you a road test to get that, because before you get the learner's permit you can't legally ride a motorcycle at all. I don't think you're allowed to ride with a passenger until you pass a road test, but there is no limit on how big of a bike you can ride with just the learner's permit.

Umm, no, you need a drivers license AND I motorcycle endorsement (separate license). At least in the states.
And on topic, crotch rockets are retarded.

Umm, no, it varies state to state, province to province, and country to country. In Canada you write a written test and can ride a motorcycle alone with certain restrictions.
Thanks for the helpful advice .

Yup, and you don't have to park it on the sidewalk, you can park it anywhere street parking is legal. This is Toronto though, I don't know the laws in Ottawa.

I'm going to call a few insurance companies and see what they quote me, that will be very important in deciding if this is worthwhile. I don't want to spend more than $300/mo, but I just turned 24 last week, and I'm guessing I'm going to get quotes in the $400-600 range.
I did just get a raise and a contract and medical benefits at work though! Very exciting stuff.

Yup and yup, 21. I buddy of mine has a DUI and he only pays something like $60 a month. My car insurance for my dinky little corolla costs almost twice what my motorcycle insurance is.
Must be different in the states compared to canada.

I haven't actually checked yet, I just thought it would be more than car insurance since the danger of personal injury is much higher. I'm going to call a few places this week.

I just got a couple insurance quotes today - around $230/month for the first year, then it drops to around $130/month next year. Not so bad, I'm definitely seriously thinking about it.
What do you guys think of this bike? http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-sport-touring-Kawasaki-ZR-7S-with-talking-alarm-system-MUST-SEE-W0QQAdIdZ488668901
or this
http://toronto.kijiji.ca/c-cars-vehicles-motorcycles-sport-bikes-2004-Kawasaki-Ninja-250zzr-W0QQAdIdZ488606811
Is a 250 too small for a first bike or will that be alright for me?

250 is a pretty good place to start. You really don't want to have a whole shit ton of power to begin with. I know that sounds kinda lame, but until you've experienced it I don't think people really realize how much fucking GO those crotch rockets have. I wouldn't go above 600 for your first bike, 250 would be even better IMHO.
250 is enough to make you faster than most cars on a light bike like that.

OK thanks - that's what I wanted to know. Sounds like a 250 is a great place. There's a few of them used around here for $2000-3500 depending on the year and accessories.

The kind of bike you get should depend on how many years experience you have riding. Starting when you were a kid, how many years experience do you have, and how many different kinds of bikes do you have experience with?
The term 'crotch rocket' went out like 15-20 years ago. It is almost a derogatory word. The word you would use for that style of bike is 'sport bike'.

Motorcycles? I have ridden on the back of a motorcycle once when I was like 10. As for cycling, I'm a very good, very experienced cyclist, but I assume there's not much crossover.

IME you will want something bigger than a 250 after a couple weeks. Seriously, a 250 is just
I suppose if you have never ridden a bike before, a 250 might be an ok idea, because you won't have any power so you'll be less likely to kill yourself, but my buddy who has never ridden in his life started with a 400 and after a month was complaining about needing more power. If you have ridden before... a 250 is just gonna be really weak.
I started small (500cc) and it was fine for a few months, but I got the urge for more power right away. I grew up riding/racing dirt bikes, though, so maybe the experience makes the difference. I couldn't imagine starting with a 250....
Maybe go around to some dealerships and test ride some different sizes.
I've got an 800 now

Yeah, advice was based on RP having no previous riding experience. I imagine experience with dirt bikes helped you a lot.

I'm looking to have some fun, and also to have cheap transportation. I will be using it within the city (traffic), and also to just rip around a bit. I don't see myself going over like 130km/h for a while, can a 250 do that?

It's possible to start on any size or power of motorcycle IF you get properly trained, but generally speaking you can't go wrong starting with a small, low-powered bike. Kawasaki Ninja 250 (or 300) or a Honda CBR 250 are both good beginner's bikes.
Sure 250's suck on the highway, but then why would you take ANY motorcycle on the highway except for commuting? People who get bored with their first bike because it's "not fast enough" or "not powerful enough" just plain haven't learned to ride and they want a bigger engine to compensate for their lack of experience.

I'm not financing the bike, that is just the cost for males under 25 with a learner's permit. The difference between liability coverage and full coverage is ~$20 a month.

Lol that is such and ignorant statement. You just sound like a scared rider who can't ride the highway and is afraid of getting his bike up past 100mph.
I've got an 800 now, and it is awesome. It's a bike that gives me all the power I want, with a little to spare.
@OP, yes a 250 would be fine for just city riding so long as you aren't too big of a dude. If you don't plan on going too fast, or hitting the highway, then a 250 will be fun to start on.
I forget that a lot of people get scared on the highway, and TBH you should be pretty confident with your riding before getting too crazy. I lost a pretty good buddy last summer because he was inexperienced and got too much of a thrill from having 600ccs to throw around.
I'd still recommend test riding a few bikes out first. And a word of advice, if you do get that need for speed, keep it out of the city. Every rider I've known who has died, it was because they were hitting 90+mph speeds in the cities. The only place I go fast is on the highway.

I do plan on riding my bike on the highway to commute about 45-60min every once in a while, even a 200km drive here and there.

You might want more than 250, then. I'd still stick with the =<600cc for the first bike.

Seriously, take my advice and hit up a couple dealerships, test drive some different sizes. Your don't have to buy from a dealership but it would be nice to know what size you want. Maybe a 400cc? Crotch rockets aren't very comfortable to ride long distances either, but riding for an hour or two should be alright.
I agree you should get something smaller than a 600, probably less than a 500 since you haven't much experience.

Awesome thanks for the advice guys. I don't even have my learner's permit yet though, and I don't know if a dealership will let me test out a bike with only my learner's.

Probably not. Not sure how canada works, but here in WA state you gotta have a drivers license, motorcycle endorsement as well as credit card before you can test drive em. Gotta give them a credit card in case you crash lol.

What was that other thread with all the incredibly beautiful bikes in it? If someone could find it that would be great.
Also, what would you guys actually recommend in terms of brands? I know some people said Kawasaki for a Ninja, but what besides that?

I like ducacti monsters quite a bit. Not too big a fan of the other ducatis but the monsters are dope. This is what I got:

Some people complain they are overpriced, but ride one and you'll see why.
I like some of the BMWs. If you like crotch rockets, the yamaha r6 is a pretty sweet bike.
I'm also a pretty big fan of the KTM Dukes, the super duke is pretty sweet too, but it's got A TON of power.

Here's a video by an opinionated motorcyclist talking about getting your first bike. I think he makes some solid points to take into consideration.

your first bike should always be more than at least 1200cc, no exceptions. if you don't have more than 1200cc's you are not getting optimum learning curves in your gigabytes

Why so he can dump it first time out? Op find a buddy with a spare 250 dirt bike and ride with him a few times the acceleration of a dirt bike is similar to a crotch rocket.

I'm not looking to die. I'm not too crazy, but I think would be fun, and it's waaaay cheaper than having a car and can do most of the things I would need to do with a car. A 250 can go 140-160km/h - that's well over the speed limit, do I really need a bike faster than that as my first bike?

Damn right I'm scared to take my bike over 100mph. One little mistake and *splat*.. Something I would advise any beginner is not to succumb to peer pressure to ride faster than they know they can cope with. You must be in full control of the motorcycle at all times and able to respond to an unexpected hazard. Some people can, they've got the experience and skill to handle a high performance bike on the road at high speeds. I am not one of those people.
I agree with some of your points but almost any beginner who thinks he or she has "outgrown" a 250 in two weeks is kidding theirselves.

If you don't have any experience i would wait on a sport bike, and go with a enduro. They are great to learn on. They don't have the 'cool factor' a sport bike has, but for a fraction of the cost of a sport bike you can not only get a great learner but if you find out that motorcycles aren't your thing you wont be out a lot of cash. Also if you live in a part of the world that rains a lot take that into consideration unless you get rain gear. Riding in the rain, and or cold sucks balls unless you have the right clothes. I grew up riding in southern California, and moved to the east coast. It rains 3-4 days a week in the summer, and gets cold and snowy for what seems like half the year. So if you are going to use it to commute you may want to re-think your strategy unless you live in an area with great weather.
That is just my .02 cents.

I just quickly Google'd Enduro and it looks like a dirt bike. A Ninja/CBR 250 will cost me under $3000, that really not so bad. ' We get pretty good summers here, so that's not an issue. It's only really cold and snowy for 3-4 months a year.

That Ducati monster is fucking sick! If I had some play money I'd buy one of those right now.
I know you don't want to hear it, but be careful out there dude! A few of my best friends have passed on them, and it wasn't their driving that cause it.

ALL Ducatis' look awesome! And sound even better. As far as the enduro, its basically a dirt bike made for the street. Better traction in the rain, and a lot more control in traffic.
Toader came up with a great point of how a lot of people die on motorcycles. Sometimes it is their own fault by pushing themselves a little too hard, but a lot of times it is the stupid inattentive drivers out there. My best friend from high school went through a green light following the speed limit when someone accidentally ran a red light. Just like that my best friend Tom Rossi was gone.
With that being said, the feeling of being on a motorcycle with no place to go, and no time to be there on a back road with a nice view is the best feeling in the world.

I was not sugesting the dirt bike for the road but riding off road will give you some experience. And you won't have to deal vith crazy drivers right away. You can probably pick up a nice 500 or 600 for the street for like 2500 to 4000 The 250 ninja is a bit under powered.

I raced motocross for 4 years.
Definitely dont start out with a 250. A 600 is JUST FINE for starting out and learning on a sports bike. Just take it easy and get comfortable with the thing before you push it at all.. Literally absolutely zero reason to push yourself before you are 100% comfortable. You will own the damn thing forever (or until you replace it for a better one).
I raced 250cc motocross bikes jumping 100 ft table tops going 40mph. You WILL want more before you know it and you can get a nice 600 in the same exact price range.

a good trade off for a monster is a Suzuki Gladius (SFV650) or SV650, the chipped versions are learner friendly (no power) and when you get confident you can take the chip out so they are full powered 650, that way you dont have to buy a whole new bike to get more power

it was fun to ride, but i sold it to DepthToTheCore who crashed it a bunch of times and wrecked it.
I now have something bigger and badder.
OP should look into the sv650's, they're easy to ride, and you can change the power modification in them from 33BHP up to 66BHP (full power 650), 650 is plenty for a novice

I think you missed my point. It was for borrowing bikes from buddies in the woods so he could learn basic bike handling skills on a yz250 with out having to deal with traffic. And yes a 5 or 600 cc bike is more than enough. I mean who in their right minds would reccomend a Ducatti Or Hyabusa to a beginner.

a good trade off for a monster is a Suzuki Gladius (SFV650) or SV650, the chipped versions are learner friendly (no power) and when you get confident you can take the chip out so they are full powered 650, that way you dont have to buy a whole new bike to get more power
That's not the worst idea I've ever heard, but why buy a heavy low-powered bike instead of a lightweight low-powered bike? Most people need a whole year or more riding a beginner's bike before moving up to intermediate bikes - I would categorize the unrestricted SV650 as an intermediate bike.
You need more than just confidence to ride a full-powered motorcycle, you need REAL experience and skill, and that takes time and practice.

the gladius is not that heavy, its pretty light. its designed with learners in mind, and the good thing is you can swap the chip out and have it full powered when you want more power (which wont be long)

Most likely a 600 is going to be too much for the op. they are fucking fast and the throttles are really sensitive. I own an 05 Kawi 636 and it still surprises me sometimes. The only way I could see a beginner riding a 600 is to keep the rpm under 5-6k and be a gear up than where you would normally be, ex. Riding at 15 mph in second gear at 2k rpm.
Trust me op I rode a ninja 250 before trading up to my 636 (fucking love it). The 250 is in no way underpowered, and is plenty fast, even on the freeway going 80mph. They top out at 120mph or thereabouts. A 250 is light and fast and way more forgiving than a 600. They're perfect for learning the fundamentals. I would recommend an 08+ ninja 250 (fuel injected). They're sexy and sporty crotch-rockety looking.
One tip is to know your limit and always know the road and what's ahead if you're going to be pushing yourself, I had to learn that the hard way in a 80mph crash when a blind corner surprised me. Remember when you brake the bike will want to go straight. I totally agree with everything that was said in the video posted earlier in the thread.

Dude, bro, dude the 650 is chipped. The chip bunks the power in half until you get confident enough, get it removed, then you have a full power 650.
Why do people not understand this?

I really wanna get a bike too, but I don't trust city drivers... I watched a dude get hit by a car on a motorcycle right in front of me so that is probably why.
I'd love a bike to ride out in the country though and go for long rides. Seems like a lot fun.

They are dangerous. I wouldn't recommend one to anybody with a big fear of death.
I'd say bikes are the best cure for depression, though.

I don't want to die - I don't think it's THAT dangerous, but you obviously have to be very careful when you're riding, especially in the city.

I wouldn't want to ride to often in a big city. Like I posted before, my best friend died on a bike. He was the best rider I knew. Some dude took a U-turn and didn't see him. That was that. He had no fear of death, but leaving us all behind was a big deal. We all took it pretty hard.
Out of maybe 10 friends who have passed away. I think 7 or 8 were from motorcycle accidents..
It's an amazing feeling riding a bike, but best in more rural areas.
Be careful out there!

If this hasn't already been said, just do a safety course and try your best to be attentive. I guess some things are out of your control, and this is just a risk you want to take.
Be safe out there though, I'd hate to hear you got in an accident.

Everything i have read about the Suzuki SFV650 (i dont think it is called the gladius in North America) doesnt mention anything about it coming with a chip that cuts the power. i was very intrigued by a bike that was made to restrict horsepower for the beginner rider. Also the two reviews i watched today on the SFV650 were generally negative.

Yeah, I would recommend the motorcycle safety foundation course as well, if I had done that I probably wouldn't have gotten into my accident, plus, the DMV course is a bitch and taking the course prevents you from having to take the DMV course.
Also, like the poster above, I've never heard of a chip being used to restrict hp either, aftermarket? Also, as far as I'm aware, 650s are set up differently in their throttle delivery, so they might be easier to handle in terms of throttle sensitivity.

That is why I suggested riding a dirt bike for a bit. You learn to Lean , When you need to get outa the saddle , look way ahead.and pick your line. Btw always always wear a helmet. You would not realize how many times I have seen people avoid serious injury even on a Mt bike .

I don't have access to a dirt bike, so that's not an option. I've been doing some research and I'm going to try and get my learner's permit this week. I'm then going to take a motorcycle safety course, and 60 days after getting my permit (which is hopefully this week) I can get my M2, and it comes with the course so I won't have to take another test. If I wait until I have my M2 my insurance should be a LOT lower.

I think riding a motorcycle would be sweet!
Canada is full of open space and those cool winding mountainroads right?
In the Netherlands you have to take a course that entails two practical exams and one theoretical. Most people need at least 20 hours of lessons before they can even attempt the exam.
Then there are rules for new drivers and limitations on the amount of CCs they can drive.
Getting a license will on average cost you 2500€
I wanted to start this summer but bought two new surfboards instead.
My perfect bike would be something that is slow but comfortable. I my mind I like to travel amongst the stars but in real life I prefer a more moderate pace.
Look at this beauty:

Always remember your back breaks first, dont do stupid shit like putting your foot on the ground when you're going 50 mph I dunno man to ride a bike I always believed you should be built, but other people I'm sure ride. I heard like 90% of accidents are from reckless behavior, bad driving. In the city though? Good Luck.

Got my M1! (Learner's Permit). That was a fucking journey!
I decided to bike to the drive test place. It was supposed to be 12km, but I went slightly the wrong way to the effect of a 5km detour. I get there, and they tell me that my driver's license expired a week ago on my birthday! Of course, to renew my license I have to go to ANOTHER place, so they send me away on another 3km bike ride (each way). I get a bit lost on my way to the other place, but I finally make it, get my license renewed, and bust my ass back to the drive test centre.
Now I'm running a little late on time - when they finally call my number and I go in to write the test, there's only 10 minutes left. It's 60 multiple choice questions. The lady was hesitant to even give me the test, but I assure her it's fine. Pound my way through the test - 1 mistake at a rate of 6 questions a minute. Not too shabby! Round trip it probably ended up being a 35km ride.
Time to sign up for the motorcycle safety course!

It's coming out to a total of $500, and they give me a bike to ride on the weekend and my M2 license. My insurance costs will be over $100 less / month having taken the course, so it's pretty damned reasonable if you ask me.

You can get a track only motorcycle real cheap. That's where someone either bought a motorcycle with a salvage title and replaced or fixed the broken parts, or it's stolen. Either way, it's impossible to ride them on the street legally (can't get insurance on a salvage title) so they come with a low price tag. A $5,000 motorcycle will sell for $1,000. I'm considering getting one of those. It'd be fun to take out to the track every weekend. You can check the VIN before purchase here.

Thanks! I love it. I spent almost 3x what my original budget was on gear, but you can't put a price on your safety. And you gotta look like a badass

Yeah I agree completely!
Did you get some boots too?
I was looking at a couple of casual models myself, but havent decided yet.

I haven't picked up any boots yet. I have ridiculously wide feet, and the place I picked up my gear didn't have anything that fit me. I'm going to wear work boots for the course, and I'll look into getting some a little later.

Ha I have the same problem! Probably because I walk barefoot or an flipflops all the time, my toes are all like nicely spread out.
I kinda liked the look of these shoes:

I literally can't buy shoes that aren't made in different widths. If they come in one width, it won't fit me. I'm a 12 2-3E depending on the shoe, it really sucks.

We dont really have the width system here. At least I have never seen it. I find that the more padded type skateshoes ususally fit pretty well.

IME different widths are mostly found in higher end (~$200+) shoes. For running shoes I go with New Balance because they make all of their shoes up to a 4E.

Nice bike! You're going to have a fun summer. Just a note about parking;
If you back it in, until the back tire is against the curb, and the front tire is sticking out towards the road, then:
1. It won't want to roll uphill, off of the sidestand,
2. Drivers can see from the roadway that the spot is taken and won't swoop in and wreck your bike,
3. You use up less parking space, and
4. You can easily just ride away from the roadside without having to maneuver to do so.

I just took it for a 40km rip around the city. I really want to find some winding roads, just driving through the city isn't all that exciting. It's awesome have a vehicle though! Way nicer to run errands stuff.

$225 per month. They said it will drop to about half when I renew next year.

Yeah, it definitely can. I'm looking into that as we speak - it's my only vehicle so I'm definitely planning on doing groceries with it and going away for weekends.

Jesus Christ, and I thought my insurance was high. I did the lump sum payment though, so that might have made a bit of a difference.

That insurance is crazy high.
Next step for you is to get some beefy tyres on it, not those cyclist tyres it has now.

Nope, doesn't make a difference for the company I am with, and I obviously went with the cheapest company I could find. I am under 25, and I haven't been insured for the past 8 months because I didn't own a vehicle. Not being continuously insured raises your insurance a bit.

I pay about the same for a gixxer 1100, with a clean record, mid 30's and after having been licensed for 10+ years. Canadian insurance companies are cocksucking ripoff artists.
OP, I'll do you a favour that you might appreciate more if you drop your bike (I hope you don't, but it's your first bike...); Streetfigters Magazine is from the UK, and features some of the most awesome customised sportsbikes ever built. You should really check out at least one issue. I can remember seeing a handful of GS500s featured in there over the years.

Great bike, OP. I was looking at the GS500 (same year and paint job too) before I bought my SV650s.
Ontario is odd. I pay ~$300/year and got my license and the bike around the same time as OP. 22 years old.
Hope you have some great rides!

Nice bike! Big 90degree v-twins are fun as hell. I rode my buddy's TLR a couple of times, and the smooth strong power delivery was awesome.
I'm used to an inline 4, so v-twin bikes seem so skinny too. Good in traffic.

I haven't dropped it yet, nope. It's been a lot of fun. I went for my longest ride yet today, about 70 minutes each way. I had surgery on my right shoulder a couple years ago and it starts to ache pretty bad after about an hour. I'm hoping that strengthening my muscles (I've been going to the gym again lately) is going to help with that.
Otherwise, I noticed an interesting phenomenon today though - every time I passed another motorcyclist put their left hand down at a 45 degree angle as we passed. Does anyone know what that means?

I had surgery on my right shoulder a couple years ago and it starts to ache pretty bad after about an hour. I'm hoping that strengthening my muscles (I've been going to the gym again lately) is going to help with that.
Otherwise, I noticed an interesting phenomenon today though - every time I passed another motorcyclist put their left hand down at a 45 degree angle as we passed. Does anyone know what that means?
yeah its just a wave sort of recognition of another motorcycle rider.
