I was not sugesting the dirt bike for the road but riding off road will give you some experience. And you won't have to deal vith crazy drivers right away. You can probably pick up a nice 500 or 600 for the street for like 2500 to 4000 The 250 ninja is a bit under powered.

I raced motocross for 4 years.

Definitely dont start out with a 250.  A 600 is JUST FINE for starting out and learning on a sports bike.  Just take it easy and get comfortable with the thing before you push it at all.. Literally absolutely zero reason to push yourself before you are 100% comfortable.  You will own the damn thing forever (or until you replace it for a better one).

I raced 250cc motocross bikes jumping 100 ft table tops going 40mph.  You WILL want more before you know it and you can get a nice 600 in the same exact price range.

a good trade off for a monster is a Suzuki Gladius (SFV650) or SV650, the chipped versions are learner friendly (no power) and when you get confident you can take the chip out so they are full powered 650, that way you dont have to buy a whole new bike to get more power

They have a chip in them?  I saw that bike recommended on a couple sites for a beginner, and there's tons of them for sale for $3000-4000 around here.

That is a pretty sweet bike. I was going to get one, but then decided I wanted an 800, so I got the ducati. Those are real sweet bikes, though.

I thought the gladius looked pretty gay as stock

so i made some changes:

i got mine when gladius' just came on the market, everywhere I went asians took photos of it (when it was standard) . they love weird bikes

you can make a gladius look pretty mean for cheap

it was fun to ride, but i sold it to DepthToTheCore who crashed it a bunch of times and wrecked it.

I now have something bigger and badder.

OP should look into the sv650's, they're easy to ride, and you can change the power modification in them from 33BHP up to 66BHP (full power 650), 650 is plenty for a novice

I think you missed my point. It was for borrowing bikes from buddies in the woods so he could learn basic bike handling skills on a yz250 with out having to deal with traffic. And yes a 5 or 600 cc bike is more than enough. I mean who in their right minds would reccomend a Ducatti Or Hyabusa to a beginner.

That's not the worst idea I've ever heard, but why buy a heavy low-powered bike instead of a lightweight low-powered bike? Most people need a whole year or more riding a beginner's bike before moving up to intermediate bikes - I would categorize the unrestricted SV650 as an intermediate bike.

You need more than just confidence to ride a full-powered motorcycle, you need REAL experience and skill, and that takes time and practice.

the gladius is not that heavy, its pretty light. its designed with learners in mind, and the good thing is you can swap the chip out and have it full powered when you want more power (which wont be long)

Most likely a 600 is going to be too much for the op. they are fucking fast and the throttles are really sensitive. I own an 05 Kawi 636 and it still surprises me sometimes. The only way I could see a beginner riding a 600 is to keep the rpm under 5-6k and be a gear up than where you would normally be, ex. Riding at 15 mph in second gear at 2k rpm.

Trust me op I rode a ninja 250 before trading up to my 636 (fucking love it). The 250 is in no way underpowered,  and is plenty fast, even on the freeway going 80mph. They top out at 120mph or thereabouts. A 250 is light and fast and way more forgiving than a 600. They're perfect for learning the fundamentals. I would recommend an 08+ ninja 250 (fuel injected). They're sexy and sporty crotch-rockety looking.

One tip is to know your limit and always know the road and what's ahead if you're going to be pushing yourself, I had to learn that the hard way in a 80mph crash when a blind corner surprised me. Remember when you brake the bike will want to go straight. I totally agree with everything that was said in the video posted earlier in the thread.

Dude, bro, dude the 650 is chipped. The chip bunks the power in half until you get confident enough, get it removed, then you have a full power 650.

Why do people not understand this?

I really wanna get a bike too, but I don't trust city drivers... I watched a dude get hit by a car on a motorcycle right in front of me so that is probably why.

I'd love a bike to ride out in the country though and go for long rides. Seems like a lot fun.
