hot jars
    #1830992 - 08/19/03 08:38 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I have 12 pint jars, 8 days old, with parakeet seed as the substrate. Not only are they not colonizing like normal, they are very warm to the touch where there is noticable growth. Any ideas?

Thanks

What do you mean by "Not only are they not colonizing like normal."

The warm makes sense, straw spawn gets warm and thus you don't need to incubate it. I am not qualified to make a determination on why it is warm in this case, though. But tell us more about what your non normal colonization is like.

well...the colonization was spreading very good at first, then after shaking one time , the jars just stalled. It is like there is powdered sugar coating on the birdseed, but no good growth. They have been like that for 4 or 5 days now. Maybe I shook them to soon?

you are supposed to rinse bird seen really well prior to using to get that coat off of it.

Quoted from FAQ-
First time you shake the jars immediately after the inoculation.
The second shake should occur once the colonization is visible at around 5-10% of the jar surface.
A third shake can be made after the mycelium is visible at around 50% of the jar surface.

More shaking doesn?t always mean faster colonization, so don?t overdo it.
