Questions regarding buying a motorcycle
    #18287299 - 05/19/13 10:56 AM (10 years, 10 months ago)

I'm trying to spend $1000 to $1300.

I've looked through some listings and I've decided to purchase an older model Suzuki, Yamaha, or Honda "cruiser" type motorcycle.

Which of these models do you think is better, and why?

Also, should I go for a bike with 10,000+ on the original engine,
or one with a rebuilt engine? I've seen bikes with ~7000 miles that seem like a good option.

How big of an engine should I get?
I think 450cc or slightly larger would be OK... I think I want
one of the bikes with a top speed of ~90 mph.

I want to be able to take it on the highway with no issues if necessary, but I don't want some over powerful beast for a first bike.

I want a mechanic to look at it, also.

I'm planning on going to this reputable shop in town and attempt to throw
them $100 to take a look and inspect it.

I'd appreciate any and all replies.

My recommendation is dont! Older bikes dont have the braking and handling capacity needed to compete safely with the dangers of cars on the road today. With people speeding, not checking lane changes properly, and driving while on their cellphones, etc... U need a bike that can stop efficiently, speed up quickly, and manuever into tight spaces with very little error. Older bikes will not stand up to this test in my opinion.

Get a kawa 250 if u want a starter bike, though i absolutely recommend a 600 size engine. Ninjas are incredible riding machines; if youre looking for something more confortable look at aome newer model dual sport bikes with ABS. Or a cruiser type bike with abs and 800 - 1200 size engine. Also, take a rider safety course and start reading up on motorcycle saftey forums. Buy good gear too

I ride a harley sportster 1200R. It is my longterm bike and i love it.

not sure where your from but 1000ish bucks dont get to much for a street legal bike.

My first bike was a 650 yamaha .  It was a decent bike .  but even a 650 felt slowish.

my current bike is a 08 harley street bob.  Its a 1573cc bike.  more the double then my yamaha.  It does not feel unsafe at all, JUST POWERFUL.  I tried my buddys crotch rocket (600cc i think), and it was SOOO zippy... touchin the throttle felt trippy as fuck.  Cruiser bikes are more comfortable/safer then crotch rockets.  So dont let CC size scare you

I instantly recommend any Harley D. But since thats well out of your price range, I recommend a Honda Rebel. Any year will do, my favourite is the 1986 Rebel CMX450. Im pretty sure they stopped making a 450 engine in the rebel line after 1987 though and only make a 250 now. Ive seen lots of those go cheaply. Good luck man!

you will get sick of a 250 after one year.... get at least a 650 imo

older bike problems include:

-electrical issues
-oil seal degredation
-fouled up carbs (need cleaning).

If you have any specific questions, shoot me a :pm:.  I've taken apart and reassembled an old honda ('85) so i'm fairly knowledgeable

As always:  i'd recommend the honda.  just such a solid brand.

I just purchased this bike from my brother for $1500.

It's a 1994 with 13,000 miles on it. It was all taken apart and reassembled 5 years ago. That is a picture of the same model I found online, mine was just painted green a couple years ago.

I think my dad said it is valued around $2200.

Oops, originally posted the wrong bike
