Help please
    #1824834 - 08/18/03 12:37 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

I found these growing together in horse manure. I am fairly certain that the 2nd picture is a Panaeolus Campanulatus (bell-shaped pana.) but the mushroom in the first picture I can?t id. It has a very bell shaped cap that is tan and not at all white. The gills are about the same color as the cap on some slightly darker on some.I can?t seem to get a spore print. The stem is very slender and about the same color as the mushroom but has a shine to it.Like bronze.

I've come across mushrooms that look very much like that. My guess is either Panaeolus campanulatus or Psathyrella foenisecii. Of course those two look like many others as well...

I think that my mushrooms are may not conocybe lactea. They are very tan and long bell shape. I will put in more and hopefully better pics.

If those are the same shrooms as in the first pic of your first post, they dont look like lactea to me, but im definately not an expert, wait for someone else. The first pic looks a lot lighter than the rest, thats what threw me off i guess.

I still have not found out what the tan ones are. I would like to know and can't find them anywhere. They where growing along side in horse manure with Panaeolus campanulatus. The spore print is brown.

NoNoNo,Conocybe Lactea do not grow directly off of manure, the pictures in the very front or at the very top of this thread posted by newAK look to me like some sort of non-active pann species,ToxicMan or GumbyDude correct me if Im wrong but,I know for sure that Conocybe Lactea is a lawn species,Peace!

Of course, spore prints would help decide all of these fairly quickly. You might try placing the mushroom being printed, along with the paper, into a ziploc bag. When the humidity is very low here I often have to resort to things like that to help get the humidity up enough. You can also try breathing on the paper to give it some moisture to release in the bag.

Just looking at the photos, Image53 suggests a Conocybe. Conocybes require a microscope to determine species accurately.

Image51 is suggestive of a Panaeolus.

Image57 and Image59 both look like Conocybes to me.

Conocybe is a dangerous genus, and it includes species that have the deadly amatoxins. Unless you can somehow verify that those aren't Conocybes, you should assume they are dangerously poisonous.

Happy mushrooming!

I did get a spore print and posted it above but maybe it was not read. The print was brown. They don't look like anything I can find on web pages or in books anywhere. Guess I will just hope that I get an answer sometime or I find it myself, but in the mean time I will concider them deadly just to be safe.

A brown spore print would tend to confirm that those are Conocybes. Unfortunately, they require a microscope for accurate ID. The deadly species has a ring on the stem, but the ring can wash off.

Happy mushrooming!
