Wierd house mushroom
    #1827921 - 08/18/03 10:19 PM (13 years, 6 months ago)

A friend of mine sent me a picture of some mushrooms that made an appearance on a houseplant in his bedroom. He lives on the coast of oregon, and I don't know anything other than this pic about the plant itself.

I guessed a Lepiota that had been hit with a green mold. But then I really don't know many ID's. The greening on the soil surface was a bit suspect. It also stuck me that if it were the right Lepiota, this might be a tiny mycorrhizal system, which would be pretty cool.
He's supposed to give me a shot of the gills, but I don't think I can talk him into taking a spore print after I told him I though it looked like a moldy mushroom. Any ideas?

Tis Leucocoprinus birnbaumii. At one point in time it was placed in the Lepoita genus. It's very common in house plants. They're poisonous.

Did a search on it, that sounds exactly right. I didn't read anything about greening, only the yellow color. Thanks a bunch!

Those certainly have more mycelium visible than any I've ever seen before. Great photos.

Happy mushrooming!

I can't even take credit for the accident, this was REALLY a friend of mine
I haven't read one source saying these might be good to eat. . .reported to be poisonous everywhere I looked.
Here's one more shot, a little better view;  The color got washed in the flash though.

Thanks again everyone!
