O and I don't get what u mean platic is not recyclable? Isn't plastic like one of the biggest recycled things on the planet? I know some types of glass cannot be recycled like water bottles and milk jugs,I think it's pet#3 or something  and I don't think the petri's are made from that?!? I may be wrong though .but I think u can throw the petri's in the recycle.

If u were saying re use the petri's ?this can be done also( probably not a good idea) but for a while I only had one sleeve of petri's to work with. I would take out side and lay on grass and shoot with the hose from the other side of yard till I saw the agar fly out, then I grabbed a bucket of double 20% sanitize bleach solution, and soaked for a while then I took to sink and washed under hot water( just hot enough not to melt,if u put you hand under the sink turn hot water on and hold ur hand under it ,if u can't keep ur hand there for more that 3-4 seconds that means the water is at least 120f .this is the temp threshold of most people's hands 120f.)
So lower the temp until u can keep ur hands in the water and wash with very suddsey soapy water go over each bottom and lid inside and out twice, then I rinse but into a cleaned bucket sprayed with isopropyl alcohol and bring into glovebox room,I set up glove box and wipe each piece down with a alcohol soak paper towel, then I wipe each petri inside and out top and bottom with alcohol as im bringing it through the arm whole ,then I use RR technique to fill the petri's ,wrap in paper tape and all is good, very little contamination, just make sure there is no open window or drafts and that u sanitize the air a hour before u enter with like oust.

But this usually works good for me..only had minimal contams..thanks for listening

O, and to answer about the glass, I was originally looking for glass only because I like the idea of making and pcing ur agar and saving it,until u wanna fill petri's then just chopp up into little bits and put 2 tablespoons in each petri, and pc works great with jars,I just wanted to have petris..but after searching eBay and the cheapest price for some petri dishes was like 5 for 20$ and they looked more like ashtrays lol,but when I saw the real type of petri's.BROSCILATE GLASS PETRI, the price was like 300-500$ for 12 lids and bottoms, and I was like WTF NO WAY!!! Can someone explain why these brosilicate glass perris are so expensive !! I don't know if I spelled that right.but damn I am feeling pretty lucky about now.thanks for the advice of buying some also.now I have even more petri's, thanks FF,

hum, I get borosilicate petri dishes for 0.37€/piece lid+bottom at lab supply store. I guess I should buy in bulk and put them on eBay.

Cynmar.com has them for a fraction of that price.  They just don't sell that many of them since plastic ones came to be cheap, so they're not especially cheap.

Re: sterilizing plastic dishes.  A simple 1:10 bleach soak will kill anything known to man.  No need to go overboard.

Garlic-related , but sorry if off-topic.

Chipped Garlic stalks make excellent substrate for Cubensis.

It does smell like garlic bulbs (but less intense)
It is anti-bacterial
It supports good mycelium growth

The stalks chip up nicely when dry.

This jar had a wedge of mycelium added to the top and it traveled down the large jar in very good time without any shaking.

Garlic stalk is very useful for the hobby , both on its own and when you colonize it. It makes an excellent grain-free spawn and breaks up easily and spreads out throughout the sub.

If you find a Garlic farmer , they are likely going to burn or throw away piles of these long stalks (4 or 5 feet long). Usually farmers dry the garlic with the stalk on in big bunches and then cut the stalk off and dispose of it.

No ... it doesn't make the shrooms taste like Garlic.

Hey FF. I've read that the bleach solution doesn't kill all things I hear that it mostly only kills spores not living mold or something like that, don't quote me but I swear I read it somewhere.
I used to work in the food business and the norm for a 24 hour place is complete wash down with bleach I think like 1200 ppm or somethingnlike that imforgot what it was but I think it's like 1:10 .but that's what I thought that it would kill anything but since on these forums I've herd otherwise..just a thought..

And that garlic substrate looks cool, very cooool...let me guess u live by gilroy....lol:)

You're thinking of hydrogen peroxide.  Bleach is one of the few things known to man that will kill anything, and nothing has any real resistance to it.

Bleach works by oxidizing things.  It's such a simple reaction that there can be no defense against it, unlike antibiotics and other germicidals that exploit a specific process.

Bleach will kill anything small, but is perfectly safe for humans (don't drink it though).  If you were thrown in a swimming pool of it, you'd eventually die too.

The restaurant sanitizer bleach concentration is pretty small.  They're just looking to sterilize very small quantities of microbes and it has to be safe to eat from.  1:10 is the most effective concentration for surface sterilization.
