How to prick out seedlings * 4
    #18277465 - 05/17/13 04:56 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

Thought I'd write up a tutorial seeing as it's something frequently asked.

Pricking out is just a horticultural term for transplanting seedlings. A good time to do this is when they develop their first set of true leaves and before the next set grow. Leaving seedlings for too long can stunt them.

You should water your seedlings at least half an hour before pricking out. This gives the plant time to take the water up. Doing this gets the plant full of water, which can help against transplant shock. At the same time you could prepare the new pots that the seedlings will be transplanted into. Water these as well, making sure to soak the potting mix. A dilute seaweed solution or other extracts that prevent shock can be added to the water.

For our demonstration we have Basil, Ocimum basilicum. You'll also need something to help pry the roots from the soil. I like to use a chopstick, but any other similar shaped tool will work. A term applied to this tool is Dibber.

It's good practice to hold the seedling when doing this by the true leaves. Holding the tender stem risks snapping them and holding the roots can damage them through body heat or crushing them.

Start off by grabbing hold of a leaf, then push your dibber down below the seedling's roots and use it to pry the roots loose. At the same time use the leaf to pull the plant free of the soil.

Grab the new pot you prepared earlier and stick the dibber down into the soil deeper than the roots on the seedling to give the roots room to fit and grow.

Still holding the seedling by the leaf, use the dibber to help the roots into the hole. Push the longest roots as deep as possible.

It's a good idea to level the soil just below the Cotyledons, which can correct any leggy growth. Back fill and use your dibber to carefully compact the soil around the seedling roots.

Repeat this then give them a water, this helps limit air pockets around the root zone. Place in a low light area for a day or Three to recover and then introduce to normal light.
