Casing Questions
    #1826796 - 08/18/03 02:48 PM (20 years, 7 months ago)

My friend in Canada just sent me an e-mail asking if I could ask some people on the Shroomery some casing questions. He says he has cased 2 African BRF cakes with straight verm in one container, and 2 Maza BRF cakes with straight verm in another container. He's wondering the following:

a.) How often should he check for mycelial growth?

b.) With "patch casing" does that mean taking foreign vermiculite and putting it over the mycelium or vermiculite that was already on the casing? Or in other words, just moving around vermiculite that was ALREADY on the casing?

c.) Is it ok for the casing layer to be to the brim of the container? Or close to the brim?

Any answers would be appreciated, I'll call or e-mail him ASAP with the answers. Thanks on his behalf.

a.) Not that much. I never tried the strait verm casing tek but with cococoir and verm, it takes something like 4 or 5 days and many visible mycellium patches are visible. I do not check them a lot. I don't want to remove the foil 10 times a day and expose the casing to contams.

b.) Patch casing means to add additional casing material over the mycellium patch. You add new sterilized casing material that wasn't in the casing before. You don't want to dig the casing because it will probably hurt the non visible mycellium growing about everywhere.

c.) No problem at all.

By the way, how deep is your casing and substrate layers?

.fs.

My friend says his layers are an estimate of 3-4" deep both. These were his first casings so he doesn't really expect perfect sucess, but he's hoping for it he says. Esimating he'd say the bottom layer of each container had 1/2 inch of verm or very close to, then about 2"-3" inches of substrate and then at least an inch of verm.

sounds like a thick casing layer. it should be about 1/4 of the substrate thickness - in your case, about 1/2"

it's like this:

the deeper your substrate level is the more flushes and mushrooms you get.

do this:

2'' substrate level
1/2'' casing
