South Australian FunGuy Happy Snaps :) New ID's please 15/05 * 1
    #18236760 - 05/09/13 07:31 AM (10 years, 9 months ago)

Hey there fellow shroomerinies,
just wanted to share some photos of the local mycological life and see if my Id request protocol is up to standard.
Any advice or ID is much appreciated........

Possible muscaria?
Habitat:
Beneath Oak trees amongst grass in leaf litter and woody refuse
Gills:
White
Stem:
White stem with veil, didn't check for hollow stem, they looked too pretty to pick
Cap:
Bright red, planar at maturity, anywhere from 10 to 20 cm across
Spore print color:
White
Other information:
Apparently eaten for food by some of the older locals from the european continent AFTER skin is removed..... Hearsay and rumour only, no proof

Possible Gymnopilus?
Habitat:
Growing from buried bluegum eucalyptus logs in soil that used to be a plantation
Gills:
Yellow, attached to cap edge and stem
Stem:
Hollow, yellow, no veil, possible slight greening around the base b ut that may have been what I wanted to see instead of what was there
Cap:
You cant quite see it but was bright orange to red in colour,
Spore print colour:
Unfortunately couldnt take one, at work with my boss watching, had to save the poor little guys from being run over by the tractor
Bruising: No bruising from handling but they were a little dry and I couldnt hang on to em to check later, possible greening at stem base
Other information:
Were a little dry when found at around 10 am today, cap already had dried a little on the outside giving it that shine; found one cluster of 6 or 7 with the 2 biggest being open

Possibly Coprinellus micaceus?
Habitat:
Growing from buried bluegum eucalyptus logs in soil that used to be a plantation
Gills:
White initially but black at maturity, not attched to stem
Stem:
Hollow, white, no veil, darkens to a golden brown colour upon maturing
Cap:
Grey turning golden upon maturing, conical shape with pronounced umbo, kinda ragged edges
Spore print color:
Unfortunately couldnt take one, still at work with my boss watching, had to save the poor little guys from being run over by the tractor too

And here is a dead bat for some randomness... Poor little fellow, just another victim of the modern age

Gorgeous Amanita's, they're definitely my favourite mushroom. In regards to their edibility, they contain ibotenic acid which is converted to muscimol upon cooking or digestion. The skin of the cap is supposed to contain more ibotenic acid but that's just second-hand knowledge speaking. Most people report the trip as unpleasant and very drowsy, but feel free to look up some preperation guides and experiment yourself.

Nice Coprinellus micaceus too, I see them everywhere and love to pick a specimen or two at the start of my hunt, and check on it a few hours later on the way back. It's usually halfway into a muddy goop by then, it's so fascinating.

Out of curiosity, found any actives yet? Conditions in the northern suburbs have been waaaaay far off optimal so far, can't wait for the season to properly kick off. Good vibes! ☮

Awesome photos.

Love the Amanitas  Stunning.

And your other two id's look spot on to me, but better wait see what a TI says, especially the Gymnopilus as im still not 100% about them.

Good work.

Cheers, Ob.

#1 A.muscaria
#2 Need a better pic but I'm doubtful those are Gymnopilus, could be Pholiota.
#3 C.micaceus or similar.
Poor little Flying Fox.

Thanks for the props on the amanita photos, I think that species is just sooo damn sexy, after psilocybes of course
No actives around yet for me, no where near the right weather conditions. We had good rain and cold down here in the fleurieu  peninsula a bit over a week ago which caused all the inactives to come up like crazy but the days this week have been mid 20's and the nights are mid teens. Besides Im not from SA so Im not even sure they are down here. Im really hoping to be able to forage some edibles while Im here as well as some actives. Its in the hands of the shroom gods I guess

I do apologise for the bad photo on #2, early daylight always throws off the colour and my phone's camera is a piece of poop. Didnt really expect an ID on that one but thanks for the attempt :thanx:
And yes, Poor flying fox.... I see so many dead birds and flying foxes/bats these days, just seems to be another sign of the endtimes....

:sun: A new day is dawning and I must get back into the fields for work shortly, lets see what
pretty little guys I find today. Watch this thread and I will upload any different or interesting ones I get decent snaps of.
Oh, and feel free to nominate anything that is POTM worthy :hatsoff:

Happy hunting to you all

Here are some known edible field mushrooms......  Agaricus perhaps... Could someone ID  please so I know what to call them?

Habitat:
In grass growing from rich soil near cattle
Gills:
Pink darkening to auburn brown on maturity, not attached to stem
Stem:
White stem with veil, solid stem
Cap:
White with some darkened grey/brown patches, 10 to 15 cm across
Spore print color:
Grey/brown in colour

These are damn tasty.....

Your boss doesn't allow his employees to have an interest in mushrooms? How is it different than something like bird watching?

Hes just an old farmer who believes every young person is on drugs,  seems to think Im just out to find "those magic mushrooms what send you crazy"......
Gonna educate him slowly and gently; being able to name different species and collecting some different edibles is a good start.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

Grill them whole like steaks. Serve with garlic butter and mashed potatoes.

Alan swears by wrapping mushrooms up in tin foil (I think with butter and Garlic) and shoving them on the barbecue. I'm going for that method when I finally find some edibles this year

More photos, hoping for some ID's

Got some habitat and gill shots of the possible Pholiota (OP #2), Im quite doubtful of them being Gyms now

Some new ones that got my hopes up with their caramel colour on the immature mushrooms until I saw they had no veil :frown:

Habitat:
Growing from rich soil and wood debris that used to be a plantation, also has had cattle nearby
Gills:
White initially turning grey/tan at maturity, not attached to stem
Stem:
Hollow, white, no veil,
Cap:
Caramel turning tan and white upon maturing, planar with slight umbo, kinda ragged edges, 50-75mm at maturity
Unfortunately I havent developed a mobile printing station for while Im at work so still no prints

And this amazing specimen, found by my friend and coworker

Habitat:
Growing from soil and wood debris that used to be a plantation, same style habitat as all the others but with scrub/bush quite close
Gills:
Red/ brown in colour, very large and pronounced
Stem:
No stem to be seen, didnt want to destroy or disturb him looking for one
Cap:
Lighter red brown, shaped like a dog or pig ear but that could just be due to it growing in a hole in the dirt on the side of a small rise, 150mm wide and around 200mm long

And heres a trail of more large Agaricus I found back at camp just waiting for harvesting

I apologise again for my terrible photography
Thanks in advance for any ID that is given, whether possible or definite.
Happy hunting to all :hatsoff:
