cow poo & straw... again
    #1825792 - 08/18/03 01:16 PM (14 years, 3 days ago)

ok, so i just pastuerized my cowpoo/straw mix. there were a couple of things that seemed out of the norm: 1) the shit i guess was still somewhat fresh, i.e. it was still moist. 2) after cooking (in oven bag) it seems much too dry. i put vermiculte in w/ the straw/poo mix hoping that it would retain some extra water. im about to use a couple of jars of spawn (TC) to innoculate it today, basically as an experiment. My question is this, has anybody had good results after using somewhat moist cowpoo, and since i cant seem to find this in any FAQ, what is a good ratio for straw to poop?

I'd suggest 1 part straw to 2 or 3 parts poop...

and mix the straw/poop at a ratio of 1 : 5 with grain.. ex: 5 Liters of poop/straw to 1 liter of colonized grain.

if it's too dry after the oven bag treatment .. simply add some clean water to get it to spec.. no biggie!!.. better to have to add water than to have to remove some..!!!!

and i recommend 10 straw to 1 poop. which just goes to show the difference between growers' preferences!

depends a lot on the poop.

Shirley - True!!

It really depends on preferences.... it mostly all works.. i use store baught composted cow manure... for the 1 to 3 thing..

Tried it with the real-deal farm poop and it had a shit load of straw already mixed in from the barn floor... so i added a tiny amount.!!

the poop holds more water than the straw i find.. or simply seems heavier..!

I like heavy things.. except my women!!.. har har har!!

as long as your moisture content is ok you should be fine.
It's best if you add vermicultte and peatmoss to your mix, but no harm i you don't it is a preference thing...

ok so i flipped the oven bag over and let some of the water run down thrgouh the dry parts of the bags (guess gravity had pulled some of it down) and then mixed w/ spawn in a turkey tray. once i started pulling the mix out of the bag i realized that the water content was fine, and was relieved that i wasnt going to need more/less. BOO-YAH!
