Shake BRF?
    #1825458 - 08/18/03 10:14 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hm, I posted this a few minutes ago, guess it got deleted. Ah well, here goes again.

Is it possible to make BRF jars in a fashion that they could be shaken like grain? (i.e. filling 2/3) The advantages, obviously would be speeded colonization time. I was just curious if anyone's tried it? Or am I stuck with double-end casing? :P

due to the nature of BRF they form solid cakes that can't be shaken...if you want faster colonization then go with whole grain substrate...with BRF you're not stuck with double end casing...you could crumble and case the whole thing....

I guess you could add a higher amount of coarse verm in something like a quart jar? what I would be concerned about would be the gummy residue that brf (rice in general) usually produces when it's heated/cooked. This film would smear all over the inside of the jar making it hard to see colonization. ????? what the hell, Try it out and report back.

a higher amount of verm would mean less BRF and less nutrients for the mushrooms to grow and that would mean less flushes...why not go with a superior substrate like WBS, millet, rye, or popcorn??

I meant double-end casing invitro, btw. Thanks for the comments though. I'd LIKE to use a superior substrate, but I have no PC, so you can see my dilemma ;p

lol kussh...if the newbie's impatient and determined enough they'd jump right to whole grains anyway without listening to anyone...but yeah...stick to the PF tek...it'll teach you the growth characteristics of mushrooms and most importantly teach you patience...

as long as you have a PC and can read the respectable FAQ, grains are no harder than the PF tek (at least for the colonizing phase)

yes, but housshroom, the reason you can say that is you've done both. imagine trying to learn to install a monitor without ever having used a computer? easy afterwards, tricky before. to the threadposter: pftek is my recommendation too. if you want to try grains, have a side project - but you'll learn far more by doing pftek once. trust me.

Doing that would defeat the simplicity and near-foolproof properties of the PF Tek. With all the advantages of BRF and PF Tek gone, you might as well just use a grain tek instead.

By the way, if you did manage to find a way to shake a PF Tek jar, you'd ruin the contamination-stopping dry verm layer on top of the substrate. You'd have to keep the holes securely covered or risk contamination; securely covering the holes will likely slow or stop colonization. You see... it's a no-win situation.

Use the PF Tek as written or use a grain tek.

Dip - I use polyfil anyway, but I still see your point

I wanna grow PF method regardless, just to get a sense of how all the theory works in application.  If there's anything I've learned it life, it's that theory and application are two entirely different things ;p  Just bein curious is all   I'll probably invest in a PC anyways, just right now I'm short on cash.  Thanks again for the comments

Using BRF and vermiculite for the PF method the best way to speed colonization is to have two or more innoculation points in the lid, follow the recipe to the letter, watch your incubation tempreture, use a pressure cooker for sure. Microwaving and boiling sounds appealing, I've seen a few success stories with them, but I've seen a lot more failures. I once knew a guy that tried all kinds of things when he first started, but eventually bought a PC and discovered how much time and resources he had wasted in doing those. While new things will continue to be discovered, the basic priciple of success will be "follow the recipe."

not too quick or you would know that BRF can't be shaken.

Au contraire, I've read a couple of grow logs that say they shook their BRF substrate with results.

"Update:

The jars innoculated in the first posts are now crawling with mycelium. Shaking up the jars a couple days after innoculation (Yes, they were BRF) created small cracks and alot of space at the bottom (when flipped, the top) of the jar. The mycelium loves the extra space and im seeing alot of white strands, very noticable increase in colonization. Anyone else ever try shakin' their PF jars? "

Quote from cowsnose in his grow log (it's the first one on the site).  I saw another one but can't remember where it was :/

I thought it was a legitimate question :frown:
