Should I buy a prepared substrate or make my own?

I've been successful with 1 out of 2 attempted grows.
My latest attempt started off with very slow germination and ended up with mold/contaminates. Sorry about the lack of pictures so I tried to describe what's going on as best as I could. I will eventually get some pics.
The substrate I used for my grows I bought off the net. It seems to be of fairly good quality. The only problem I fear of running into again is the slow colonization of the cakes. Mentioned in the thread I linked to above, it took about a month before I noticed signs of progress in both grows. I know you have to be patient with this type of hobby but a month is abnormal. Could this be because of the substrate? Should I make my own substrate? My temps are no more than 3-5 degrees away from being ideal at any given time, usually right on. Tips and advice is much appreciated. Thanks guys

i would say make it yourself deffinately...i can get a 11lb brick of qoir for about 10 bucks...and works fine by itself...but i also have access to all the manure i want so i guess thats why i say do it yourself so i guess it really depends on what types of material you can get locally or close to home verses ordering premade....premade is great stuff if from trusted vendor..but makin homeade you know exactly what you got ..........hell i mix a little of everything i got little coir/verm/manure/straw/..slow colinization could be genetic??

follow the pf tek at
www.mushroomvideos.com
You really cant go wrong if you follow it exactly.
Also make sure you are using a reliable vendor.
Reasons for slow colinisation/contamination
Contaminated syringe Contamination introduced due to poor sterile procedures Incomplete sterilisation Dry verm layer got wet
Since you bought pre-made jars that only leaves the first 2.
Make your own, its easy and doesnt take long.
Follow proper sterile techniques.
My only recomendation is to make the pf tek mix just a tad drier looking for just 1-2 drops when you squeeze the mix when testing for field capacity. colinises faster.

The jars I prepared my self. The mix of grain and vermiculite was what I bought and used, from what I believe is a trusted source. I used sterile technique all around: flame sterilized needle before inoculation, wiped everything with alcohol, washed hands and wore gloves. I used about 1 cc of spores for every injection, about 4-6 ccs for each jar. Didn't put a dry layer of vermiculite at top of jars though.

I get 5kg cocotek at my local hydroponics for 13 but the cheapest bale is 11) (Sometimes I just order off amazon though as the "local" hydro story is ~30 min away)

Petco has 3 650 gram brick for around $9 but you have to have them match the internet price which has not been a problem for me to get them to do.

Didn't put a dry layer of vermiculite at top of jars though.
so you had no filter in your jars? for the pf tek you need the dry verm layer unless you use another filter and silicon injection ports.
Also you should only use 1cc per jar not 1cc per inoculation hole
did did you use a still air box? and did you wear gloves.

Thank you for making it clear bcuz I thought 4 cc too much from what I've read but I'm a noob. Actually I need to know something simple, rinse off verm before filling jars?

4 cc's will work, but it's overkill and a waste of spores. For PF tek, don't rinse verm for the topping off of cakes. The verm barrier functions as the GE filter for cakes that if becomes wet will wick in contaminants. As far as adding verm to coir for the purpose of a bulk substrate, mix the verm with the coir and heat treat with boiling water similtaniously.
