Stalled Jars...
    #1816281 - 08/15/03 07:41 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

All of this is about AFOAF obviously:

jars were innoculated about a 5 weeks ago. Colonization proceeded nicely to about 65%. Now the jars were checked again after a week of not doing so, and the jars have not colonized any more. Is this normal? Is there any way to speed up the process and revive the mycellium.

Some key info: after 2 weeks i inverted all of the jars (including tapping the bottom of the jars to force the cakes against the top lids. Then on the 4th week I flipped them again to the normal position. Was this too much movement for the cakes, is this why growth has stalled? I hope my lack of patience didn't ruin these cakes....help me out....

what kind of tape did you use? Did the jars have air exchange after you taped? if not, that could be why they stalled.

Sounds to me like you should start over.

I left the tinfoil on for the first two weeks....when i inverted the jars, i took the foil off so that there was proper air exchange through the holes in the jar lids....i figured the dry verm on top would keep out contams....

any hope guys?

Your substrate might be too dry. Are you heating the jars? All you can do at this point is be patient. Sometimes the jars will slow down but will eventually fully colonize. If the just refuse to finish, you might be able to birth them partially colonized, then cauterize the uncolonized areas with a red-hot nail or something similar, then fruit them in a very clean environment.

Good luck!

thanks, my AFOAF will give it two more weeks, and if nothing changes he will take some of the jars and mix it in big ziplock bags with sterilized BRF/VERM cakes (non-innoculated) and hopefully it will colonize all of it fast

Don't give it 2 more weeks, something is obviously wrong if it's taken 5 weeks to colonize a little over half way

Break off the steralized part and put it in the ziplock bag with steralized brf/verm, but throw the uncolonized crap away, something is wrong with that shit

Did you mix it in a 2:1:1 ratio of verm/brf/water?

Don't let it get you down, patience is more then a virtue in this hobby, its pretty much a rule. So dont get discouraged, there are lots of ways to try and salvage it, just do what you want to do with the ziplocs and it will most likley work!
