water drops
    #1824122 - 08/17/03 10:19 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

I know this guy that knows this girl that is using a bulk substrate spawned with brf cakes. Her question is: There is water build up on the mycelium, its just water droplets just sitting on it. What should
I tell him to tell her what to do. The bulk substrate is almost 100% colonized.

Thnaks in adavance.

This is her first runn with bulk.

From what I've seen, this is common with bulk subtrates colonizing in trays. As long as it doesn't get contaminated, then there shouldn't be a problem. The water that has formed on the top of the substrate will be absorbed when the casing is applied.

Don't mist. if your casing is in a terrarium with perlite, take the perlite out or stop whatever contraption your using to humidify. Let the casing absorb the moisture (and provide its own humidity) till the pins begin to set. After your first flush, check the moisture content of the casing and adjust accordingly. Make sure to fan, and give plenty of light. (sounds like your ready to fruit).

Hmmm, I suppose you could gently dab it up with a paper towel once its 100% colonized. Its a contam risk, but so is leaving the condensed water there.

I recommend applying a casing layer.

You'll get better flushes for a longer period of time with reduced risk of contamination.

Like said before, the water droplets could be a source for contamination to set in if not taken care of. If you do not apply a casing layer, then you should take care of the water buildup. But, this water can be absorbed by the mycelium once it enters the fruiting stages, but you don?t want it just exposed in little puddles.

If you apply a casing layer then you will take care of the water buildup, and add a moisture layer to your casing so it gets all the water it needs during mushroom growth. Not to mention a sort of protective barrier from contamination and future water pools...

can she put the casing layer before the bulk substrate is 100% colonized?

She could, but that would make it more difficult to achieve an even pinset. It's best to wait for full colonization of the substrate.

The method my friend uses to colonize straw always results in little spots of moisture accumulating on the surface of the substrate. He ignores it; no problems.

Try to keep it to a minimum though.

one more question, can she fruit without the casing layer, get a flush the add a casing layer. The reason she asked me to ask you is because she wants to trip off these poo grown shrooms asap. Thank you.

Sure, she can case after the first flush. Tell her to be careful that the substrate doesn't dry out. Best of luck to her!
