Texas Gulf Coast Cubies (Updated! Pics & Observations)
    #1822616 - 08/17/03 02:21 PM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Howdy Folks,
I have not been on the Shroomery in a good while. I wanted to share a nice little find a friend and I stumbled across in the most unusual of places. Needless to say, it has been raining along the Texas Gulf Coast for several days. We had been out in the country scanning a few fields. We found nothing. On the way back into town however, we stopped along a new sub-division that was being built. We just wanted to check out some of the varieties of mushies we were seeing from the road. The trees were freshly mulched within the last few months. Never expected to find what we did but Eureaka! Many of the trees had these rather healthy cubies growing in clusters or large singles. I know a few are over ripe but hey, you pick 'em as you find 'em. Look at the mostster with the coke can. It weighed over 150g wet. The cap was 6 1/4" across.

Happy Hunting Amigos

On freshly mulched trees??? That subdivision had to have been built on top of a cow pasture. Maybe all the mulched tree trash along with topsoil from the pasture was pushed into piles and there is some buried dung some where in there. I have found cubensis growing form stable shavings on numerous occasions where no dung at all was visibly present ontop of the shavings or underneath the cubensis. My theory is that it only takes one small piece of colonized dung to spawn into very rich organic composts, including woods sometimes. You can do the same at home, take a colonized jar of cubensis mycelium and it will spawn onto many different and odd substrates, just ask the growers here how many different casing materials they have seen cubensis mycelium take to.

Overall, a very unique and rewarding find  Nice cubensis!

LK,

They are building homes on old cowfields all the time...I havent ever found a cubie unless it was growing from a cowpie. That is a huge mother an i thought i found one as big as they get at about 5 inches wide!

Allow me to be more specific. I indeed was extremely surprised to find these where I did. The neighborhood has many cow fields close by. I am a little weary of jumping fences in Texas. Good way to get your ass in a sling. But I have snatched a few good cubies now and then close to the fences. Just hop over and then hop right back.

With regard to the trees. I say mulch but it was much more rich that I expected. There was wood bits in top but there was deffinately some rich humus and compost mixed in. If you removed just a bit of the top layer you revealed a very nice layer of black earth. The 'mulching' of the trees was deep. I would say 10-15". Most of the ones I found were growing our the sides of the mulch/compost dressing (would be a better word). I about S**t. The cubies I found growing here were far more robust than ones I have found in the area on past occasion (manure grown). It would not be surprised if the tree dressing mixture had some manure mixed in.

I want to say one more thing that is VERY important. There were at least 5-6 other species of mushrooms growing among the same trees. 2 of the other species somewhat resembled Cubies. One species resembled Pan Trops but they were sadly impostors!! BE VERY CAREFUL and make sure you know what you have!!

I'm glad to see that someone is finally finding some mushrooms down here in TX!   Very nice find!  Hopefully I'll run across a field like that soon!

Peace,

Here is a pic from a little closer. Sorry it is a little blurry. You can see blue around the base of many of these (where they were cut.

Howdy again people.  After another good dose of rain that came from the recent tropical storm down here, the cubies were once again standin proud around the trees.  This time I got a few pics of these beautiful specimens in their natural state.  In case anyone was sceptical about these growing in tree mulch...here's the proof.

After watching these cubies develop over a couple of days, I made an important observation.  When the grass around these trees is mowed, the cuttings are blown up into and around the mulch.  I have also observed the lawn service in the area placing small layers of fresh mulch on the trees from time to time.  My theory is that the grass gets layered among the mulch.  That's where the majic happens.  It would make more sense that these would grow on the composted grass.  I have however noticed a good bit of colonization of the mulch/compost material.  I'm sure the mycelium draws a few nutrients it needs from that...not to mention the moisture supply.

Enjoy these pics...more will follow as I am allowed to post more...

Happy Shroomin'
