My SCATHING letter to AOL
    #1821783 - 08/17/03 01:24 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

This is a letter I ambout to send to AOL (American Online). I know it's long but I really need some feedback on it. If I have distorted any points or if anything is unclear please let me know....

Dear Steve Case,

I have been an AOL subscriber for more than years five years. Over the years I have noticed a steady progression downwards in terms of quality (of the overall service) to price ratio. The reasons:

1. My email account has been completely oblitherated with junk email. I was forced to create a new email account because of this. I would recieve and still recieve approximatley 8-12 junk emails a day. Why did I get so many junk emails? Because I went in your chat rooms and numerous fellow AOL members added my screen name to a spam list.

2. The price... has gone up while the rest of the internet providers have lowered thier prices. Why would anyone have a service provider these days? Because of dial-up. The base accounts you have now will dry up due to the spread of broadband. Thus more canceled accounts and less money for you.

Your service is no longer worth anything to me except for a few reasons. The reasons I keep AOL:

a) AOL radio is great. The music played on there is awesome. I keep it on top alternative and literally listen for hours without changing the station.

b) I download music, porn, dvd movies (not porn). (Sofware other than games is in these rooms too, but I choose not to download that because it is not useful to me) and full games from your illegal chat rooms. I'm sure you know about these. You guys banned private rooms like, "server", "gif", "mm" (meaning mass mail), "porn", and various others that I can't recall. AOL users then proceded to create other private chat rooms to conduct these same illegal activities. There are two chat rooms that you did not ban though named "cerver" and "mp3".
I am going to do an experiment now... I am going to attempt to enter rooms named "mp3" and "cerver". Entering these rooms will allowing me to illegally download music, porn, dvd quality movies, and fulls PC game. Chances are it is full. This is because there are multiple "cerver" and "mp3" rooms. I might have to type "cerver", "cerver2", "cerver3", "cerver4", "cerver5"... just to find an open "cerver" room. Then I'll try "mp3" rooms. I'll try: "mp3", "mp32", mp33"... in an attempt to get into a "mp3" room.
I got in. This appears..

OnlineHost: *** You are in "cerver". ***

Then I look for a server. Something amazing has just happened. My experiment has gone horribly wrong. I entered the "cerver" room and it now says:

XXXX XX XXX: NEW.AOL.SERVING.METHOD.LINK.BELOW angelfire.com/rnb/decz/mirchelp.html ROOMS:*arsmails*eon*exmails*impmails* *legionmails*n0ize*ragenzombie*scorpio* *slnmails*serve*upss*cerver*imgdistro*ezi*

...Well my AOL frooze and had to reboot AOL. Could have been a Windows problem though not likely. So the material in the "cerver" surprised me. Apparently there are new chat rooms names according to this message. (I have not been in the rooms for over a month) You guys must have done something to make these rooms no longer have servers in them.
Now I could have choosen not to put that last part of my experiment going wrong. I figured since we are all being honest in here why not. I am not going to alter the truth.

I demand to know why they were allowed to illegaly distribute music, porn, dvd movies, games and other software for over three years. You guys should be sued by every major music, software, and movie company. It is because of you that these music, movies, and software get posted on other file sharing services such as the infamous Kazaa. This allows millions of people in the USA to get their hands on illegal items.

I would like you to provide an answer to the following question: Why should I not expose the harboring of criminal activities that occurs in AOL chat rooms? I would like an honest answer or else I may mail this letter to some new agencies and see what they think about it. It sounds newsworthy to me. Imagine the headline: "AOL responsible for millions of $ stolen from software companies"

I am writing this letter because I am trying to objectively decide wether or not I should keep my AOL account, and I would also like a honest answer to the illegal chat rooms that have continued for so long.

Sincerely,
xxxxx xxxxxxxx

*I did not proof read this letter before mailing it. Please forgive any spelling or grammer errors.
**The name XXXX XX XXX was cloaked because you would likely cancel this person's account.

There's one thing that confuses me. You say:

"The reasons I keep AOL:

b) I download music, porn, dvd movies (not porn). (Sofware other than games is in these rooms too, but I choose not to download that because it is not useful to me) and full games from your illegal chat rooms."

There's definitely a grammar error here, but it looks like you say that you keep AOL because you download stuff from their illegal chat rooms, and then you go on to state that their illegal chat rooms are bad. Are you for, or against these "illegal" chat rooms? (Maybe it's just the grammatical error that makes this confusing)

I put illegal in quotes, because if AOL isn't posting stuff there, I think they're safe, much like illegal things posted on "newsgroups" don't get service providers in trouble.

Yea I know, it is confusing. I was really high when I wrote it. I haven't seen it to AOL yet because I don't know how. I am going to revise it some before I do.

I do download stuff from their chat rooms. I ended up on some tanget about why illegal music is bad.

But wouldn't it be illegal if they knew those chat rooms were there and did nothing to stop it?

What a coincedence, I bought my wife a laptop for her B-day 6 months ago and dell offered a 6 month free service to either MSN or AOL so knowing that AOL sucks i choose MSN. Well somehow i ended up with AOL but it didn't really matter because i was just using them for the free service (i already had a cable modem). Anyways i called today to cancell it and they asked me why i was cancelling my service. Well i didn't want to go into a long explanation so i said that it basically sucked and we never really wanted their service. I explained all the junk mail, the pop-ups and the automatic downloads were very annoying. He informed me that i obviously haven't been on AOL alot or i'd know that this was a thing of the past. Not wanting to have my intelligence insulted i said: "ha, yeah right buddy, just do what you have to do to cancell the service" (in a joking tone)..but the knob kept telling me that that doesn't happen blah blah blah.

I think AOL thinks that all that use their service are fucking idiots. I'll stick to my cable modem.

My wife doesn't know a lot aboot computers and she even said it sucked before i could tell her that it did. I like what AOL has to offer (for beginners, games, chats) but their service just plain blows.

AOL is "#1" due to marketing, in my opinion. That's it.

Also in my opinion, AOL is fuckin lame....

Indeed AOL is NOT the internet! There are thousands of much better ISP's out there...and they cost less! I'm glad to hear AOL is about to tank..and crap like this is probably the reason it is!

Strumpling: Ah...I wasn't implying that any single ISP was. However, most AOL users seem to think it is..when in actuality AOL is an intranet.

d33p: Well they're losing customers left and right, there are many lawsuits over their billing practices, and their Stock has lost much of its value. If they aren't tanking, they're certainly in trouble.

While I agree that AOL is the big pile of crap, that graph doesn't really say anything. The whole economy has gone down the toilet. If you take almost any internet based business, the graph would be similar.

Invertigo: I know exactly what you mean by when you tried to cancel AOL. It literally took me about a half hour to do so. I might as well have gotten a police interrogation. After running around with circles with that guy and I knew he had all the info to cancel my account,I literally told him to shut the fuck up and that it was none of his business and I hung up the phone.

There were more instances where he tried to talk me out of it but i kept interupting him and telling him "I don't care, do what you need to do to cancel my account" then he would say "But, do you know.." Then i'd interupt him again and say "I don't care, do what you have to do"...along with a few "so what's" for good measure.

True, although AOL enjoyed a slighter larger rise, followed by a larger fall, putting them about even with the computer technology index over the last 5 years:

AOL is the biggest piece of trash provider out there...Anytime I see AOL on a computer I have to fight the urge of slapping the user upside the head...but then I figure if they are stupid enough to use AOL then they deserve whatever happens to 'em.

I think AOL isn't as popular for the sole reason that most people are getting broadband now. I think most of their customers are just people who are really new to computing in general that don't realize that most of what you can get on AOL can be found elsewhere for free. I don't think they have a whole lot of long term customers, sans morons.
