Can You Turn Popcorn (Grain) Jars into Cakes?
    #18197865 - 05/01/13 04:17 PM (10 years, 10 months ago)

Can you do it?  Instead of spawning and substrates and ratios and all that shit, what about taking the jars of colonized grain, breaking them up, putting them into one good sized flatcake and fruiting it?  What say you cultivation gods?

Handling is the biggest advantage to using popcorn/whole kernel corn. It allows you break up cakes/jars more quickly.  However, if you use these to spawn you lose a great number of inoculation points by utilizing a larger grain.  Plus, most reports I've seen have lower yields for fruiting (when used as a final substrate).  If you want to use it, that's fine.  I would utilize it as a spawn for inoculating another substrate, but only if you have a practical reason for using corn over WBS or some other smaller, cheap grain.

Long story short, you can do what you propose.  Your yields may vary.  Don't let that discourage you from trying it and seeing how it performs for you and your preferences in cultivation.

I use WBS cakes in my greenhouse inbetween the growth of trays so i am in constant harvest.

the cakes perform well, not the best.. but better then pf i think.  they hold together if you are careful dunking and transporting..

bits fall off from time to time, but no problem.

in reference to rez effect grain substrates:

Quote:

It's pretty simple... When I did it, I just took a big handful (with a gloved hand, obv.) of moist/wet verm. per quarts worth of grain and mixed them together.

Here's some examples of Texans on rez'd popcorn:

each one of these trays is a quarts worth of popcorn and a handful of moist/wet verm.:

It worked pretty well as far as straight grain casings were concerned.

faht

yeah thats what i kjeep recomending to people that are asking questions about casing grain. This seems much better since all that you need to fruit straight grains is to supply enough moisture to support fruiting, so just mix with moist verm.

Wow!  Now that's information I can use!  Mix the grain with some wet vermiculite and down the road we go into the SGFC!  Hell yeah!

I've cased popcorn with straight pasteurized verm in trays in a SGFC

That's neat.
Fahtster, what'd the substrate look like at pinning, was it all white or spotty?

  Those are nice looking trays

thanks.  Honestly, it's been so long since I did rez'd grain my memory is a little spotty itself.  But if I remember correctly, they get all white again.. you can see in that pic of the two uncased subs that they turned all white again for the most part, so it pretty much looked like that.  Popcorn is kinda spotty with myc growth in general.  Parts of the grain can look barely colonized.

One thing you need to remember when doing straight grain/rez'd grain trays that the trays have a higher contam risk due to all that high nute substrate; especially if over watered.  So, be careful not to do that.

I would also say that you use fine grade verm to mix with the grain.  It makes for a more solid substrate if you're going to move it around by dunking it etc.
