Memory Implants
    #18158235 - 04/23/13 10:06 PM (10 years, 11 months ago)

A prominent neuro-scientist has invented a process through which he can replicate long term memories with microchips. He broke down the signal patterns into a mathematical theorem that has allowed him to reproduce the way electrical signals ripple through braincells. Basically he recorded the firing patterns that were evoked with a particular memory in the hippocampus. In this case he taught a rat to push a lever to receive a piece of food. Once recorded he implanted the chip and doped the rat so it couldnt remember what it was supposed to do to get the chip. Once it was established the rat couldnt remember anything he turned the chip on and the rat (miraculously) remembered what it was supposed to do to get the treat. They also ran tests on monkeys and had serious improvements in memory recall.

This is some seriously futuristic technology being developed :awesomenod:

very striking, considering up until now they had no evidence that memories were even actually stored 'in' the brain.

call me when they stick the chip in a fresh rat, and it can work the lever

I was thinking the same thing... the rat already knew how to operate the lever just couldnt remember, not the same as implanting artificial memories, but I can only imagine the benefits to implanting early in people that have genetic markers for Alzheimer's and the like.

If/once it works in human beings (which will take many more years), this might lead to utter confusion akin to the stuff we know from Hollywood (Vanilla Sky comes to mind).

Btw, I bet that rat is one confused and depressed animal.

Why am I not surprised to see DARPA wanted their hands on this?
