A Panaeolus from the backyard, maybe a caster?? (pics)
    #1819460 - 08/16/03 12:09 PM (13 years, 7 months ago)

Or whatever you guys are calling this species lately. I've been finding these in my backyard for a week now, and I blew them off as Panaeolus foensecii, but this last one I found I printed and the print came out black. The stem kinda has that shiney bronze color that GG describes in the Pans he finds. The stems also has the typical twisted appearance that Pans often exibit. Smell is normal for a Pan. No bruising observed, I am having a hard time pulling enough mycelium with the stems to try bruising it. Gills are gray in color with white edges. The upper region of the stem near the apex has small fibrils similar to Panaeolus subbalteatus.

I have become relatively certain (now) that these Shrooms grow from the grass clippings left behind from by the mower... go ahead and do a taste test Lizard, they have a certain taste to them.

Also, they lose much of their potency once dried.. they are mildly potent most of the time (when fresh) and some collections can be mild to medium potency.

This is a first for me for seeing them outside of Florida. They grow basically year-round here, with the month of March clearly being their favorite time to fruit.

Awesome find (and pictures), keep picking um and if you find at least a dozen or so, maybe try a bioassay and let us know what you think. They have a unique taste (and trip) to them..very colorful on the eyes, and comfortable on the body.

Keep shroomin,

Awesome LK, always one step ahead of the game. How many actives does that make for Georgia?

And ggreatone234, those are hands down my favorite lyrics on round room, or at least currently.

Yeah, they take a little bit of practice to pull them without losing the base of the stem (where the mycelium will only sometimes bruise blue).

They lose a lot their potency after drying
They also lose a lot of potency when they get wet (from either rain or sprinklers).
They also lose their tastyness after drying, or when they get wet, but otherwise they are very yummy, and they are very clean and easy on the eyes and the body. Very colorful trip, i usually eat 1 or 2 dozen fresh.

I remember at least 2 of my bioassays on this mushroom (out of maybe 25-30 bioassays on them) and they were in fact super potent, as potent as Copelandia cyanescens!~

What's the habitat? Just the grass in your backyard?

Yeah, just been finding them in the grass about 10 feet off the back porch  This is the first year I have seen them come up there, and they have only been fruting for a few weeks now to my knowledge. I had the same theory as GG. I think they colonize and thrive off old grass clippings that compost back into the grass after everytime you mow.

And no, these are not growing in your friends horse pasture. There are a ton of mushrooms which fit the appearcne and general stature of this species, you have not found the same mushroom, jackgreen.

A few weeks is about how long they will fruit for. Then the patch will dissappear probably never to be seen in the same spot ever again..

The mycelium of this mushroom moves (travels) from lawn to lawn, i have considered buying a PH tester kit to test the ph of the soil where and when they are fruiting, because i think that they must prefer a certain PH (and i really want to see someone cultivate these things.). My theory is once the PH level changes the mycelium moves on towards the next spot with the right levels..

2 or 3 people (here at shroomery) have looked at the spores under the microscopes and they all say that they are not castaneifolius.

That is about all the info i have for ya, maybe you can find the other missing pieces for us in this puzzle.

Thanks.

Yes Im intrested in this very much. I have seen very similar mushrooms popping up here in central georgia, but with only a picture to go by, how can I be sure I have the active one? Is there any tell tale features to ID by? I bet there is lots of poisonous look alikes, just a guess though. Great thread, and thx for any info.

I have had the exact same looking mushrooms, only they were a bit smaller, and weren't growing in grass clippings, but in long grass.

I picked about 6 or so, ate one then thought how stupid I'd have to be to eat the rest since they are not blue and I have no clue what they were....I'll give a look around this coming season an see if they pop up again.
