Cat food is a pretty poor choice for substrate. Too high in fat since it's made with meat. Mushrooms aren't big meat eaters.
Dog food or other common corn based feeds would probably work alright.

poor dogs.
They do awesome with a raw-meat, cooked rice and carrot diet. Everyone feeds them corn.

It's probably better for them than the odd scraps and garbage they evolved on.

Ahhh, no.
Dogs lived much better (though often leaner at times) before man came along with their processed non-food garbage.
Ever stop and wonder why a majority of dogs that reach old age are in horrible health? Gee, same thing with people these days.
Diet.
How's the myc doing?

Damn son, we got to gets you some book learnin.
Dogs didn't live better before man because they didn't exist. Dogs evolved on a diet of human scraps and garbage.

Yes, us fancy scientist types call that "aging". Once you peak around early middle-age your health steadily declines until you die. Generally, the longer something lives the worse it's general health will be when it dies.
> Gee, same thing with people these days.
Yes, humans also experience the "aging" phenomenon.

Excuse me? Dogs were around as 'wild' dogs for a looooooong time before man 'domesticated' them. Those 'scraps' and 'garbage' you're talking about were meat and bones. What books did you read?

There's a huge difference in health and diseases in the 'old' today, vs. what is was thousands of years ago. Diet, not age is causing the healthcare 'explosion/crisis' everyone is bitching about. (You can find references to diseases and illnesses that people of old used to die from in those books you were mentioning.)

Aging and your body shutting down or having issues because of the food you eat your whole life is completely different from dying of 'old age'.
Go get some book lernin' and try again.

Get back to the book learnin'.
A little more reading and you'll probably even come up with a better experiment than feeding meat to fungi.
