My little bro is 14 and he always knew I smoked pot. I never talked to him about it, in fact I almost always tried to hide it from him.
He started asking me about it and seemed to have an interest in it. I was younger than him when I started smoking so I tried to educate him a little and I let him try it. Half a year later he very rarely smokes pot and doesn't seem to enjoy it that much.
I've had friends who didn't even smoke weed until they graduated, now at the age of 24 they are in a deep cocaine addiction and will spend over 800$ in a night up their nose alone; but hey, at least they waited till they were graduated to start experimenting. IMO and from personal experience I am glad I experimented at a younger age only because when I was out of high school, and ready to start a career,I had experienced enough of that scene to realize it was time to move on to a different stage of my life.

I feel like educating my brother when his curiosity rooted may have eliminated that forbidden fruit factor.

it's not that cut and dry and you know it. your anecdotes, while i'm not disputing their authenticity, are atypical. a lot of kids that get wrapped up in drinking and illegal drugs fuck up, often in very far reaching ways (e.g. criminal convictions). as a loving, responsible older brother, it should be your chief concern to protect your younger brother from stuff like this and help him focus on the bigger picture in order to become a highly functional member of society.
