Astrophytum Seedling Question
    #18187542 - 04/29/13 06:28 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

I threw a bunch of astrophytum hybrid mix seedlings from WSS and had them under a 70% shadecloth outside. Another smaller amount of the seeds were put under a doubled up 70% cloth, and ended up greener. After I noticed that, I doubled up on the other shadecloth. Most of them got greener, since they were yellowish or reddish, but this one is much lighter than the others. Should I do something about it?

There's also this one, which I think is just pale because of the dogs bumping the pan, shaking the seeds deeper into the soil.

That first one appears to be albino, if you have Pereskiopsis I would recommend grafting that thing asap. Since fully albino seedlings lack chlorophyll they can't survive on their own as they can't properly conduct photosynthesis.

I've had albinos before with loph seedlings, but unfortunately the pereskiopsis grafts didn't take on those particular ones.

Anyway, great find and good luck!

Thanks, I was hoping that would be the case! I'll try to graft it onto pereskiopsis tomorrow. It's my first albino and it'll be my first attempt at grafting, so I hope it takes.

Cut it in half and graft the top and root portion. Plants will grow from the roots and you double your chances of success. If in doubt do some research to reassure yourself.

I'd let it grow a little bigger to stretch a bit so its easier to graft if your not the best grafter, I'm pretty shakey and the more rare they are the more shakey I get! The bigger it is the better your chances, just watch it daily to make sure its all good then graft it in another week or 2.
