Very nice dude.  How did you find out about the place?  I've been digging for months trying to find a decent charitable organization to volunteer for that I don't have to "apply" to be part of.

Here it's called "our community bikes." It's basically a place run by a bunch of alternative types, that takes donations of free bikes and parts and rebuilds and tunes them up, then resells in order to support themselves. The one i was at had 12 employees (some very part time) and a rolling cast of volunteers.

There is a sister location called "the pedal depot" which actually does most of the rebuilds, where as "our community bikes" is a full service shop + they'll help you learn how to fix your own bike (you rent a spot at a bike stand and have access to them and their tools.)

They both offer stand rentals and use of tools + they have parts bins you can scrounge through if your looking for a specific type of part, lots of good bargains to be had, but alot of stuff is pretty beat up. Definitely caters to commuter cyclists or utilitarian types more so than competitive cyclists.

They are both refuge places for marginalized people aswell, meaning transgender or homosexual, or former drug addicts and what not are welcome and it is considered a safe space. Basically there's a bunch of punk rock politics governing them. Consequently i find them quite disorganized. However, they certainly fill a vital niche in the community. I left knowing more when I left, than when I went in.

Super chaotic atmosphere though.

There are also a couple other community bike shops around the city, one at a major university...

Depending on your location (large city, or not) I am sure there are endless opportunities. I hear you though, going through "official" volunteer organizations does seem kind of lame. I had limited options when i was younger and lived in a smaller town and tried finding somewhere to volunteer. Right off the bat nothing appealed to me, so i ended up never volunteering.

Maybe you should try broadening your areas of interest?

I am also interested in doing something for homeless people, drug addicts, or maybe immigrants. I think it might force me to understand them from a broader perspective and that it would be good for my head.

I feel the pain of your day everyday as well my friend.  You are not alone at all.  This is good though.  Doing something like this could change your whole life in a day.  You never know what can happen in a day, or even a minute.  Most of the time shit don't happen at all but when it does.. and it will.  It's inevitable.  You'll be shocked and you'll fall in love with something/someone.

As shitty as life fucking really does blow.  Try and stay positive as best as you can, its the only way to survive.
