so I live in a 1988 jeep Cherokee on the back of a friends property. I only leave here twice a month to get groceries and I build bird houses and yard art and shit like that for income. I have a friend that works for a company that I stalls glass doors and they always have lots of what they call scrap lumber from the giant crates that revolving doors come in and they let me haul it off:) so I'm tired of living in my jeep and am going to construct my own 12widex22longx14highwith a lofted barn style roof. this is what I did last weekend, dug my post holes, and in the bottom left here you can see my power water and drain..
this weekend I'm gonna spend $500 on 2x4s and some truss joints. I don't really have a floor plan yet.. seeing where my utilities are commin from and keeping in mind that money is a big issue. I much apreciate you guys' input, ideas and critism:) I will keep posting as it comes together hopefully with some thought from yall.

Just a thought, due to the size of your design, "12widex22longx14high"
That's very close to a 20' long shipping container. Here's a simple google image search to give you an idea - https://www.google.com/search?q=shipping+container+living&client=firefox-a&hs=0Sl&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=sl55UaCgF4XU0gGawYG4CA&ved=0CAoQ_AUoAQ&biw=1440&bih=731
Here's a 20', http://www.ebay.com/itm/20-Shipping-container-/151033297902?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item232a493bee
Another look - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=DsVxgOjNLbA
The nice thing is that you can cut a hole in the back and put a stove flue through it and attach a wood burning stove. These containers are cheap and are used all over the world for living.
Have fun, Lana

thanks for the thought but it's going to be much cheaper for me to build y own place out of wood, I have researched alot about those shipping containers and I can't find one for less than $2,000, even the smaller size ones, and that's with out the cost of what my local towing company is gonna charge to haul it out here. I would love to come across a decently priced box like that! I'd bury that sucker and go underground;)

http://www.instructables.com/id/How-to-Build-a-12x20-Cabin-on-a-Budget/
There are more rustic versions too, just search on the website.
I am also interested in doing this, although more upscale than you are attempting. I would possibly build an A frame, although haven't done much research on design, i always see these little cabins and think "i could make that."
Goodluck OP - sounds like your's is going to be quite rustic - are you planning on insulating it, using drywall, having a wood stove, plugs in's and stuff like that?

yes sir I am goin for the rustic look, cause I like it and also it seems to be most appealing at the cost hah. i also have enough corrugated tin that i could roof and side it with. like put felt paper over my particle board ad then corrugated tin over that, and it 'm thinkin of the nicer of the recycled pallet wood would look decent on the inside but idk what was all kept on those pallets, like pesticides and crap like that so Mabye I'll just build a porch with said pallet wood, I'll insulate with standard home insulation, and I've got a hook up for a RV, sewage drain, water and a 220v power supply, I have a delima though, converting the 220 to 110, the cheapest transformer I can find is $380.00. I will have shitter and shower and a kitchen area and I will build and up stairs loft for the sleeping chamber. I have a wood stove that's seen better days and no flu pipe, a guy down the road is moving and he's got a newer one with everything and I might be able to score that from him so we shall see about that one. and great link by the way! I've never built truss' before so that is goin to help alot!!

Just curious as to the type of building experience you have?
It actually sounds really awesome, I am jealous.
I used to work for a restoration company, and we had an adapter build for a 220 converter ... so you plugged it into a 220 plug, but got 4x 2 plug outlets from it. We had an electrician build it for us, you might try calling around.

You don't need a transformer to get 110 from 220.
220 consists of two hots (110 each) and a neutral. Simply use one of those two hots and the neutral to get 110.
That's exactly what happens in your breaker box.

I would be considered a handy man I guess, I do plumbing, basic elec. like runnin romex, switches/outlets, ceiling fans etc.., lay the shit outa some tile, cabinets, countertops, Sheetrock+tape &bed and so on, I worked for a guy for 5 years on and off he bought run down ass homes and him and I would go in and flip the shit holes. but for the last 4 years I have been operating and programming for CNC machines, mill and lathe... I was thinking about creating my own transformer but then here comes Lovedemshrooms and tells me this!!

So ... how does this work with zoning and building permits and things like that?
There is actually a major movie coming out soon about an old guy that builds a house on his own land, and the government tries to shut him down, and he fights it.
This is actually what i am the most curious about - I am considering buying some land and building my own cabin while i go to university, which seems all well and good, but i really have NO idea about the legal logistics about it.

If you wanted to be badass you could go off the grid. Also cob is cheap and you could still incorporate wood into your design. You can build one for under 2000 dollars and have a shitton of thermal mass. cob

 No building codes?

look into it. composting toilets are cheaper then septic tanks. Also it may require inspection to get you hooked up to the grid. If you want to live a self sustainable life off the grid is where its at.

like I said earlier in the thread I have water and power and a hookup to a septic tank already so that wont be an issue.. and I'm pretty much off the grid already, and as far as self sustaining ive got a good foot hold on that too:),this is a portion of my garden and here's a few of my chickens, I think I have like 30 right now..
