Philosophy Intro - New.. Asking for help.
    #1815750 - 08/15/03 02:44 AM (13 years, 3 months ago)

Hello everyone, I've been a member of this forum for quite some time now. I read alot of posts, but reply rarely.

At age 21 after 3 years of schooling and one associates in graphic design (in a 2 year school that doesn't know how to run itself), I have now decided to change my major entirely.

I'm going to school in the fall as a major in philosophy.
In the spring I'll be transferring to another school.

Writing and Philosophy will be my concentration.

Philosophy is something that interests me, and as a result of my transferring actions... I will be jumping straight into some more "advanced" philosophy classes so the credits will transfer.

I'd like to catch up on the beginnings... I'd like to know where to start.. and head in a general direction so I can get a better grasp on the material my classes will be covering.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to where I can go, or what books I can look into that will brief me, or educate me in the department of philosophy?

I might sound like a desperate and hopeless person right now. . . but I have an interest and I'm pursuing it.

Any help would be appreciated.
(yes i know i wrote this poorly)
thank you

study philosophy, but don't major in philosophy, when you get older you'll wish you had a more useful degree.

I was going to school for graphic design too, and now I'm changing my major as well. I'm not really a philosophy buff; I prefer forming my own without other influances, but I pick up some info of old philosophers every now and then.

I think I'll take a philosophy class one day, just not soon.

Can you write?

I know I can write.. I have the ability.
There are some things I'd like to learn about composition and similar things...
I'd like to just take classes and see what I need to learn.

My only problem is laziness. It completely ruins me.. I'm sure alot of people can relate.

I just hoped you could spell and shit. Cuz it would suck not having any writing skills and being a writer.

My recommendation would be to major in English or Journalism if you enjoy writing, with a minor in philosophy. The univeristy of missouri, columbia has a pretty good journalism program... http://system.missouri.edu/vpacad/degrees/umc_degrees.htm

That what I'll be doing most likely.. but I'm just wondering what books will help me get started on the road to learning.

wil durant
alan watts
maybe some robert anton wilson & some georges ivanivitch gurdjieff (just for contrast)
pirsig's _zen and the art of motorccycle maintainence_
& for a nice overview of "life, the universe, nad everything" carl sagan's _cosmos_
& you can get some online stuff to read - spiritweb, csp, erowid, & plenty more i'm sure...

read alan blooms "the closing of the american mind". it gives history that is relevant to today's interesting philosophical problems - all centered around america's adoption of german thought leading to unqualified relativism, which is bad.
