Mushroom Identifications Needed for School Project
    #18151550 - 04/22/13 06:20 PM (10 years, 9 months ago)

My college was offering a mushroom class, and I couldn't resist taking it. Now for the big project that I delayed on, I'm supposed to hunt for mushrooms and identify them. Because I slacked, I don't have anyone that can help me. Then I remembered the website of professionals that might be able to lend some aid. So I ask if I could get some ID's for the few mushrooms that I could find. Most of them, however, didn't release spores when I left them overnight. So if it's possible, could you try to give an identification for these without the print color?

Species #1

Habitat: Found growing in sand next to a creek in a forest

Gills: Reddish brown, not attached

Stem: Tan to reddish brown, hollow

Cap: A tan color with an indent in the center that is brown

Spore print: No spore print
Bruising: No noticeable bruising

General location: North West Coast region of USA.

Species #2

Habitat: Found growing out of hay underneath some wood

Gills: Off white or beige, attached

Stem: White, not hollow

Cap: Brown to light brown, smooth, dry, almost shiny
Spore print: No spore print
Bruising: No noticeable bruising

General location: North West Coast region of USA.

Species #3

Habitat: Found growing out of hay

Gills: Brown, unattached

Stem: White, hollow

Cap: Tan, with an indent in the center, dry and smooth

Spore print: Dark brown
Bruising: No noticeable bruising

General location: North West Coast region of USA.

Species # 4

Habitat: Found growing out of sand

Gills: Darker tan than the cap, unattached

Stem: White to tan, not hollow

Cap: Light tan, dry and smooth

Spore print: No spore print
Bruising: No noticeable bruising

General location: North West Coast region of USA.

So essentially, please do my work for me? Tell you what: check out this key and see where each mushroom takes you. I'll give you a hint for the first one: the spore print will be white.

Well, sort of. I was supposed to employ the help of somebody who knows what they're doing, and I'm too late for that. I'll give the key a try though.

Do you think that the first one is a Macrocystidia cucumis?

edit: accidentally pasted Parmelia Conspersa instead of Macrocystidia cucumis

Oh and by the way on the sample ID post here, it says that there's a template that you could copy and paste and fill out. But the template doesn't include "Spore print" like the post says it should.

That's a lichen. Mushroom #1 is likely in the genus Laccaria.

Don't be stressed man, that's problem #1 right there. You need to be relaxed to think clearly. Enjoy identifying the mushrooms, it can turn into a fun hobby for ya. :mushroom2: :peace:

Ooops, I had that copied before. I meant to say Macrocystidia cucumis.

Macrocystidia isn't a bad guess.

A lot of the identifying features could be better captured. (Clear shots of the gills for instance, and selecting mature mushrooms that have the caps open instead of attached to the stems).

You might want to get familiar with the genus Tubaria and then the genus Agrocybe.

Here's a great site beyond the Wikipedia Fungi Portal: http://www.mushroomexpert.com/agaricales.html

Am I going to need to take new pictures?
And I've gathered so far that the spore color is necessary to ID..

I would recommend this opportunity in particular! I'll check back later and try to help you out. Maybe you'll find other fungi while you're out there.

I left them all overnight and only species 3 left any sort of visible print.

They might have been too dry. It's good to find hydrated, fresh mushrooms and get home fast enough to get good prints. No rush though.
