barebones - how hard to build a pc from parts?
    #1812063 - 08/14/03 12:58 AM (20 years, 7 months ago)

ok
so i ordered a sapphire 9500 pro vid card last week...
it got here yesterday and (please someone call me a noob)
i realized my comp doesn't even have an agp slot
so i just spent $150 on something i cant use...
so i'm left with 2 options...
return the card and deal with piss-poor graphics/framerate
or upgrade my entire system

i'm using an emachines 1gig celeron pos
i put in a nice soundblaster, 510 ram, robitics 56k,
and it has a good burner/dvd drive/soundblaster live drive in it
so i have some decent components to transfer if i buy a barebones system

i checked up and i could get a nice amd xp2600 system with motherboard
on ebay for like $275... which sounds reasonable to me right now.
i'm just wondering how difficult it is to start something like that

it will have no os or hard drive with it...
can i transfer my hard drive over, thats something i've never changed, and i don't know if there are compatibility issues with some drives with some mobos
if i get one with a new hard drive, how does one go about starting it up without an os...
i don't really know how to ask what i'm wondering,
i'm interested in doing this, but i don't know if it's out of my tech-league... i'm kinda lookin for a step by step/ how-to for building a comp from scratch...
$275 and a little time is worth it in my mind,
but i don't want to order something, try to make it work, and end up losing both pc's and having to face the "real" world  :P

(this is not an ad link, just to give an idea of what i'm looking at buying, if this is bad, feel free to remove)

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=2746652026&category=38114

so i'm hopin for some advice here,
or a link to a step-by-step how to, i dunno
help

It isn't hard at all, those links above are pretty good.

And no, it's probably not the best idea to just put the old HD in there with the old system/drivers installed, it is almost guaranteed not to work, and if, then very very badly.. Your best solution would be to backup, format, re-install fresh. You'll need a bootable CD of your favorite OS (every Win version since 98 has been bootable from CD so that shouldn't be a big worry).

Alternately, if you don't wish to backup, wipe the OS before installing the HD in the new system.. C:\Windows\ for 9x systems, C:\WINNT\ for NT-based ones, http://www.budja.com/w2k/uninstall_w2k.html for a list of files you'll want to get rid of, too. I wouldn't recommend this way either unless you're willing to put up with random bitchiness of the compootar.

Or.. keep the old HD as it is, get a new one to put a new OS on, no backups needed that way. Programs installed on the old HD will give you grief about missing registry entries more likely than not, though.

Yes, thats some great advice!
As to building your own machine, I've built three of mine, and I must say, it's nice to have a 'puter that fits your needs, instead of one that someone else thinks you need! It takes a bit of research, but you'll be glad you did!

Last friday I bought a motherboard and an AMD 1800+ cpu for only $59 at Fry's.

Definitely a good deal
