i consider poo infused seed to be " naturally fortified".

" fert " grains, IMO ,
should be used  by those who use NPK concentrates.

theres an element that is hyper leery of NPK concentrates,
but, not bothered by poo water at all.

it would be important to keep that distinction.

BTW , yrs ago, we used poo infusions for a while.
it works.

we way prefer NPK concentrates now.

Did you try poo infusion with the grass seed? Just curious. I noticed extremely slowed colonization with other grains, but way faster colonization with soaked grass seed.

i started with rye in the late 70's
oss and oeric.

early 80s, went to RGS and millet, and brown rice.
did thousands of poo water seed jars till mid 80's.
it works.

other seed? no idea.
im allergic to corn, so its always banned from my presence.

by late 80s, we realized NPK ( we like 20-20-20)
was what gave our grow the nitro feed it needs.

of intersting note though,
for those that have a mycotek acct.
there is a " dutch king" fert corn grow,
that has to be one of the most awesome things ive seen with corn.

me and the maid, laff our asses off when we think of that thread.
ill pry never use corn, but that thread, changed my POV on corn and ferts......

violet doesnt have a a maid.
and, my maids name is lady monica.

once upon a time,
while SWIMming at a FOAFS rental house,
on an island far , far away.........

k peeps,

the building blocks of the subs in this tek,
amount to this,

water,
agar,
BRF, ( brown rice flour)
WBR ( whole brown rice)
RGS, rye grass seed,
and,
NPK ferts from 7-7-7 to 20-20-20

note the pic below.
in this case, were pouring 1/4 full quart PP5 RGS

next pic .
water added and microwave action.

we bring this to a boil, 2x , 24 hrs apart.
we add fert, as directed on its label to the water .

naturally , when hydrated, FRGS is strained for a hour or so.

we usually save the dark water from this,
and ,use it for RGS / BRF fert agar mixes.

sometimes we use this liquid, to hydrate other things, like millets.

you can do alot with this, and various grain combos,
creating both subs and agar mixes , same batch.

after full hydration, strain well,
load in PP5 , or polycarbonates of your choice.

PC , as directed..........

and ,walla.

some of these pics, were taken by lady monica,
as she often does alot of the prep and supply handling.

nice to see your out and about testing the new sock myce.
nobody takes shots  at me till at least their 20th post.

annie, never a sock , always the straight foot.

gimme another vape minit or so,
then some inoculation, and incubation pics........

This is the main difference between your seed prep and mine. I pour just a bit more boiling water on the grains than is necessary for proper moisture levels. Instead of the 2nd boil a day later, I microwave them loaded into their containers a day later.

Just now finished up a round of this in fact!

Quote:

This is the manifestation of that difference. Due to my choice in hydration, I need only let excess water drain/drip off for a bit before I stir and load up.

Truthfully this is only a practical difference. I don't yet use/need nearly so much agar - what grainwater I do have stays in my freezer for quite some time. Thus my method of prepping grains leaves less water, hopefully leaving more of those goodies in the seed where I'm sure to use them and much sooner.
What water is left over is VERY dark tho. So dark that I can double it with plain water and it still be nearly black. So, like you:

Personally I haven't yet added BRF to this since the straight-up grainwater is all I've needed for culturing every species I handle.
However, for some of my upcoming experiments ;} I'll be doing that as well!

Keep it coming!
I'm sure lots of people will be happy to see these variations on the tek

ya theres lots of obvious variations,
and ,its hard to call the exact menu on a cook in the field.

i feel its impossible to tell peeps precisely what to do,
as mileage varies .
the idea is to obtain the simple material, and run with the obvious.

next up,

For the first part of that quote, uhh, that pic of yours with like 6 tons of tubs wasn't it?! I'm interested!

And for the second part of the quote, word. The only way it could be better put together is...in my house. :tongue2: I'm eager to get a handle on this.

By the way (and this may well have been mentioned already, I can't recall), I wonder if one reason that grass seed colonizes so quickly is that it has that sort of husk on the outside, tricking the stuff to keep looking for good food. Then it realizes, what was once looked for on the outside, was hidden deep within. Perhaps the old saying is true, the grass is always greener...

PS, I dream of someday doing a comparison (through this TEK) of straight GS, GS/straw, GS/manure, and GS/straw/manure with a domesticated strain of Pan. Cyan. Maybe even see how earthworm castings fit in the mix. I'm curious if the grass seed husk mimics straw to a degree, and if it can significantly increase yields vs. other straight grains. It's on my bucket list I suppose.

So far in my experience with using grass seed the myc quickly devours the seed husk, making the nutritious center easily ready for colonization. It's kinda cool watching your sub turn color as it colonizes. It seems, in my jars at least, the myc at the leading edge of colonization is bright white and rhizo as hell while its consuming the less nutritious husk. Then once a section of seed is colonized it switches back to whispy growth from the abundance of nutrient inside the seed. Since straw is hollow and WAY less nutritious, I don't think the GS is "tricking" the myc. Personally, I believe the amazing growth on GS is just like Violet said. "Cubes are a grass-lover, not a dung-lover". Thousands of years of evolution have programmed the DNA of cubes to thrive of this sub. IMO, it seems ridiculous to me that we as humans think we can "improve" on what Nature has already designed. Again, IMO, feeding myc WBS, coir, corn, BRF, etc is like starving a person and only allowing them to eat food they can't stand. Sure, it'll keep them alive, but it a'int no steak dinner if ya know what I mean.

To Violet/Anne:

I'm curious if y'all have tried this way with P. Cyans. Its very common to find them growing on the same patties as cubes, so could it be that they are also a "grass-lover, not dung-lover"?

I suspect that this may vary with different Panaeolus species. Here's hoping Pan. Cinctulus is one of them, as I'll be trying it out on grass seed before long.
Wouldn't get my hopes up too high, as they do seem to be a "dung lover" just as much. May be similar to how many hardwood-loving edible species can fruit somewhat on straight-grain.

Damn! I was kinda hoping they were alter egos. Would have been kinda cool. One identity teaching the other... the other taking credit for it... :wizardfail: Oh well. I do have a serious question for everyone tho... My straight seed blocks that I have fruiting open air have grown "skin", complete with vein like structures, essentially casing itself. My question is 3 part:  Why? Is this common with straight grain uncased? And should I do anything about it? They are finally pinning, but one poor guy is trapped under the skin. :frown:  Here's pics.

Not that I have any experience whatsoever, but I'd wonder if your FC is too dry/too much FAE at times. That's cool, a whole new level of in vitro. Fruiting inside the sub itself. Like a cocoon.

Ooh, I just read your post again. You said "fruiting open air", so maybe that is the issue indeed.

Open air in a walk-in GH. I do have a fan going most of the time, but RH is high 90's. These formed when I had the blocks in a FC inside the GH (on shelf), but the two blocks I fruited after these (straight to shelf) are doing the same thing. I have 4 GS "cakes" I rolled in dry verm and they are good and fuzzy, no skin. Just on guy under the skin for now, but 5 other lil guys outside of skin. Grow log is first link in my sig.
