SATA vs. ATA?

Is Serial ATA the future of hard drive interface for the next 10 years -- especially in the server environment? I'm on a fact finding mission. Please discuss...

In a server environment I will stick with SCSI for quite a while. If they (the SATA folks) can reach their claims of 150 MB/s in a disk array, it might replace SCSI, but a lot will depend upon bus congestion. I see it as much more likely to become a client machine standard and less used in the server/disk array arena. It is going to be hard to get people to switch from SCSI/HPPI/FiberChannel... in the server business you don't change it if it isn't broke.

I'm going to be building a new computer soon and I am going to use SATA. The motherboard I will be using has a dedicated channel for it and will give the full 150mb data transfer speed, I understand some implementations use the PCI bus. Another advantage besides the speed is the rounded cables, which will help the airflow in your case and hence assist in cooling (more and more important as computers increase in speed). Of course the price aspect when compared to SCSI is another compelling reason.

Starting now? Absolutely not. SATA drives are small and expensive compared to ATA drives. The theoretical limits of the 150mb/s haven't even been reached yet. I'd give SATA a few more years before the majority use SATA for server applications. I think in server applications ATA has caught up with SCSI, and ATA is much less costly.

daussaulti SATA drives and ATA dives are price about the same with only dollars in difference. But on to the main point as of now the speeds are about the same but i have a feeling that the theoretical speed of SATA will be reached in the near future. I think the price difference between SATA and SCSI is a lot more attractive on the SATA side. Plus the SCSI drives are faster on only some ways of accessing information. It kind of like the difference betweem Dual Data rate Ram and Rambus ram of the past the Rambus ram reached a limit and the standard changed and thats what i think will happen with the SCSI SATA drives.

I don't think the theoretical speed of SATA will be reached in the near future. Ever since the ATA format came out, its been getting faster and faster. Even with ATA 133, which a theoretical 133mb/s, the fastest burst transfer rate I've seen is about 60. And ATA drives have been used for years. I think ATX is outdated, and no significant progress will be made until another motherboard format is introduced IMO. Even right now, the performance between the ATA and SATA are negligible.

Thanks for the info, everyone!
Feel free to carry on the dialog. It is interesting, and I'll keep following it.
