will jiffy muffin mix work as a substrate?

Stick with one of the proven substrates till you feelcomfortable to experiment. All the stuff for most oof the teks are at your local groceery store.

Substrates also have to have a correct water balance and water retention rate, and preferably have to be organic.

A potting mix, named "Jiffy Mix" is used by many as a casing mix because of the ease to get. However, it is not a muffin mix, so do not try using that.
