Indeed
We are spiritual inside, some may remember as kids, some may not remember
Inner self is infinite/eternal (doesn't change), and same for everyone
Most people that meditate for long find their inner true self
The only way to know if living as inner self is if happy every day(and if you see people around you are too), infinite happiness
I would recommend 'the power of now'(someone gave it to me recently), it confirms my idea and your idea, that the ego is acting like a filter to dampen our emotions and reduce ability to truly experience/be, makes us live by our desires (living/worrying about the future instead of now often, so never peace) Once we go beyond it, we see that we are the same inside everyone of us, only the ego makes us think we are unique
Still reading that book, it was just a little weird that every thought I have had was in the book, word by word, so haven't read it fully yet
But it didn't surprise me, there is a shared consciousness that we can all tap into , inside ourselves
peace

To the topic:
See, when you first wake up you realize that it was yourself that was 'sleeping', much of the world is already awake/'enlightened', or people around you are waking up at the same time as yourself
That is why meditation, religions, alternative medicine, shamanism, spiritual healing etc. are so popular
and has been for a long time, but you never noticed and never cared about spirituality till that day
it opens the mind a bit, to never let out any possibilities
at least in my experience
sure I see people who are where I was before awakening, living almost fully as the ego and worrying about everything, and not even realizing all worries are self-created (don't say anything to them unless I sense I can help them) but not very often anymore, everyone around me seems to be awakened already/awakening it seems to happen naturally, you don't need to worry about others
it doesn't really matter where people are spiritually, they are still you, you are them
their mistakes are your earlier mistakes, or you wouldn't be able to spot them

Was it like a switched that turned on overnight? Maybe a gradual progress? When did you first realize you felt awakened?

The only thing that matters is accepting others as they are
With or without ego
See the good in people, and try to help them when you can, like were they your brother

Well I realized a lot of people have had my experiences and weird symptoms before me
I was sick with kidney stones and tripped, and something changed since that day
I am not 'I' anymore, only 'we'
Yes it happened almost overnight... the world was different (or actually it took 5-10 years of daily suffering to get there, realizing suffering is self-created)
