I hate to ask what will probably be an obvious question to most of you that frequent this forum, but is Swami an atheist, or agnostic?

Thank God we have a rational, concerned government to make these decisions for us, otherwise who knows where we'd end up.

Quote:

The review was prompted by a complaint signed by 10 people, said DMV spokesman Robert Sanchez.

Are there 10 people from FL on here who would be willing to sign a complaint about the pro-christian ones? Who knows...

The story is dated March 02, I wonder whatever happenned with this story.

Edit: Update: http://www.atheists.org/flash.line/atheist6.htm
Quote:

he Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles has reversed an earlier decision, and now says that Gainesville nonbeliever Steven Miles may keep his personalized license plate that states "ATHEIST."

I think this is actually funnier than the license plate story: http://www.sptimes.com/News/112901/Citrus/Mayor_banishes_Satan_.shtml

Quote:

The words just flowed from Carolyn Risher's pen as she sat at the kitchen table Halloween night. She wrote fast, ignoring commas and periods.
"Be it known from this day forward that Satan, ruler of darkness, giver of evil, destroyer of what is good and just, is not now, nor ever again will be, a part of this town of Inglis. Satan is hereby declared powerless, no longer ruling over, nor influencing, our citizens."
"You're either with God or against him," Risher, 61, and a lifelong resident, said from her office on Wednesday. "I'm with him."

It's from 2001, but I didn't hear about it back then.

I had a wrench thrown at me in Jacksonville about 10 years ago. It went right over the hood," he said. Another time, "someone surreptitiously tore up my tag and threw it in the bushes. "

This goes directly to my "Spirituality & Anger" thread. Those that espouse loving attitudes through their beliefs are frequently angry hypocrites; whether they be Christians or New Agers and haven't the faintest idea of what it means to be loving and non-judgemental.

I agree wholeheatedly with you, Swami.
Whenever I hear someone say admiringly of someone, he/she is "very religous" I can feel the hair on the back of my neck start to stand up.

I love that Eurythmics song, "Don't mess with a missionary man"..

black-eyed looks
from those bible books...

And it's true that this attitude is not limited to fundamentalist Christians; anyone who feels threatened by someone questioning their beliefs can react the same exact way. Higher thoughts give way to primordial fight or flight responses really damn fast.

I've been training myself not to react automatically in a defensive way to someone questioning my beliefs. If my stance is based on truth, nothing can stand against it. Hell, according to the bible, Moses challenged God himself at Mt Sinai. That takes guts, and that's someone dedicated to finding out the truth.

Of course when he came down from the mount, the Swamis of his time were waiting for him.
But he'd already dealt with God so it was no contest.

Everyone's beliefs are based in truth.. truth to them, at least. Truth isn't so omnipotent.. I'm not saying your beliefs are wrong, because I believe that everyone's beliefs are right for them. I am saying that other people might not believe that what you believe is true to them.. which means they believe that YOUR beliefs are true. A lot of people think that they have the WAY, and that it is the ONLY way... all paths lead to One, to quote System of a Down..

But what I am talking about is your highest truth isn't the highest truth for others, it is completely subjective. There is nothing wrong with that, there is no right or wrong way, as there is no right or wrong. It is suspossed to be like that, the only reason we think that there is only one way is because we have religions that hook people in by telling them that, threatening with burning in Hell, so they all accept what they tell them to do.. religion is the best idea I have ever heard of for controlling people, even better than having big guns and making them do something, because this way they want to do it..

Only you can find the Pathway for yourself to venture out on..
Peace.

What is really scarry to me, and I see it on the OTD/Pub forums all the time, is that the rest of the world assumes that all Americans are like this (paranoic retards).

Not all but to me and to many europeans i know, we believe most are. I don't know if it is a cultural thing but americans tend to be paranoid about their own freedom and the way it must be protected. The call upon the law is used constantly, it looks too aggressive. I believe it's because american culture has become so complex that such complexity can no longer be sustained by the same social mechanisms that creates it.
Just a thought....

Damn, i hope america doesnt turn into a social black hole. Who knows, their would need to be some force to equal it out, like a new generation of people to really spice things up and defuse it a bit. But i agree with what you are saying.

IT seems as if some people are still in the dark ages... like lag on an over crowded server.

The problem as I see it, is that we have somehow ended up with a bunch of corrupt moral crusaders in office for the last twenty years or so.  Politics has turned into a money making occupation rather than a humble service for the people.  They have created a beast, which is now out of control and too big for anybody to get rid of.  I was upset enough by the current administrations policies that I moved out of the country, literally.  We need to axe both parties and get some new blood into office, but I don't see that ever happening.  Contrary to popular belief, the Jerry Springer show represents a very very tiny portion of the American  public...  as does the current administration.  :frown:

All I can say is that the view is much different over here and back inside the Beast.. and that's what we're here for, the next generation to spice things up.. my band will be there, on the forefront, before my mysterious death that reeks of conspiracy... hehe

What a waste of an existance! Honestly why get invovled? Why not concentrate on spiritual growth, go live somewhere else as best you can.....i know you see the futility of it all....but in that respect it makes very little differance.

For once I agree with Swami.

It's so easy to subscribe to a belief and make yourself feel better, we'VE ALL done it. It doesn't necessarily have to be spiritual.

For instance ...after eating smoe really nasty fast food "ahh...Ive been eating helathy all week, no biggie" then you step on the scale and weigh an extra 50 pounds, and suddenly your world collapses ....

Human nature is about survival...so its obvious that we keep certain thoughts , concepts, and beliefs in our heads to comfort ourselves, or give ourselves motivation to live.

Nothing wrong with that - EXCEPT that when these thoughts are challenged, the individual can become angry, confused, depressed, etc.

Has happened to me plenty of times, shit happens everytime I have a psychedelic experience and my ego is soccer punched along with all my beliefs that have no merit.
