Contamination and cakes..
    #1811072 - 08/13/03 07:51 PM (20 years, 8 months ago)

How easy is it to contaminate an already fruiting/fruited cake?

Is it possible that there are contaminates in the cake/mushrooms and there be no signs... (eg green... etc etc etc) like could they look perfectly normal and be contaminated? If so could this mean they are not grown fully?

As well can contaminates hurt you if they are not fully grown enough to show signs..

Thanks

EDIT:
could someone move this thread.. I just realized I posted it in the wrong forum.

I agree for the most part. Cakes are tough. Sometimes they can get a bit sickly though. Like if you dunk them to long, or they just don't like it for some reason. I had one that just did not seem real healthy after it was dunked. A couple of days later it got the green funk. I think it may have had a missed abort on it possibly though. That could explain it's inability to fight off the green death.

can I handle my cakes with dirty hands and not be too worried?

Not saying i am dirty but just on the occasion I forget to wash my hands or something.. like do I have to be REALLY peticular about washing my hands when handling? As well should i be really peticular about cleanliness when I am dunking/cold shocking my already once fruited cakes?

place a sign on the terrarium that says:

WASH HANDS BEFORE OPENING

and keep a bottle of anti-bacterial hand gel next to the terrarium at all times...you could get away with handling the cakes with dirty hands but why risk it...the less chance for contamination the longer your cakes will survive...and the longer your cakes survive the more flushes you could get out of them...

A freshly birthed cake is extremely contam resistant. The more flushes a cake goes through, the less contam resistant it becomes.

It is always wise to be as clean as possible.

That would definately suck. I have found the limits of filthiness pretty well. Always wash your hands. As far as dunking goes, here is an easy clean way to that I do it.

Open jar, and scrape out verm layer with clean utensil. Fill jar with enough water. Put a little foil ball on top of the cake to hold it down in the water. Put the lid on, and through it in the fridge. Make sure you tape up any holes in the lid. Come back the next day, and drain the water from the jar. You can then either dump the cake right were you want it, or double end case it in moist verm.

when you double end it.. would that mean I would have to put a damp layer of verm on the end that was facing DOWN the first flush?

because I double ended one and I put it facing up the same way as the first flush and put verm on top of that.. :/
