Sourdough starter trade?
    #18113003 - 04/15/13 03:47 PM (7 years, 2 months ago)

Anyone interested in trading sourdough starters? :pm: me or post here

I currently have:

a 'Friends of Carl' Oregon Trail Sourdough starter that is tasty fast and light

a local Northern Canada cultured sourdough that we call the Klondike Starter that is sour enough to put hair on your chest a little slower to feed and grow but very tasty

Would be great to trade with others and get that amazing diversity the Shroomery is known for.

My first two loaves of basic sourdough turned out fantastic. Even my picky daughter loved Klondike. I also made flapjacks by collecting the daily discards then adding egg and baking soda; although not as spectacular as the bread they were tasty with maple syrup and butter.

Thanks again for the starters  Jiminy.

Hey... That bread looks awesome! Better than mine even...

What kind of flour did you use?

Great job!

The flour was Pillsbury brand all purpose white. I used three - two hour loose fermentations and a three hour final rise, all at 72F. I started with 1/2 cup starter and added only flour and water. I spritzed them with wet fingers just before and threw a cup of water in the bottom of the oven just after the loaves went into a 450F oven for 40 minutes. I modeled the recipe after this.

Thanks for the kudos.

You know a lazy trick with the sourdough is to put a smaller smear onto wax paper, flatten it, and put it in baggies, then the freezer. I make up 5 or so then pull them out and revive them when I want sourdough (which is about once a month and sometimes much more often). I neglected my starters in the freezer for 2 years once and they revived better than expected. This way gives you the enjoyment of sourdough without the annoying and never ending work of feeding your pet yeast. Try it!

I had the friends of carl oregon trail yeast and my ole lady thought it was a bad mason of dry milk and dumped it. I have to get another, they are easy enough and it was a great light sourdough yeast. Right now, im working on a kansas wild one.

Hi... sorry too bump this thread but i guess it was better than just make a new one!

My girl went to SF cali and brought back some of boudins bakery bread... and it was amazing... reading on the baggie i discovered about sourdough... here in my country it is never used...

I want to try and make sourdough bread since it was a success at home so we would like to make some for personal use we just  invest some good time in learning all the details and perfectioning a recipe...

I read a bit on how to start about making your own sourdough without the need of a starter....here starter recipe

which is basically just mix water and flour and leave them in the open air..

so I already went to buy flour in walmart but all of them flours have chemicals like sulphites, zinc oxides and preservants of all sorts... that i guess would interfere in a normal fermentation process...

do you really think normal flour with preservatives would be good enough for this??? integral flours also have a lot of preservatives, so im kinda unsure....

maybe i need to make my own whole grain flour?

i would like expert input on this... also read that brewers yeast (saccharomyces cerevisae and baccillus spp is good for sourdoughs

Sorry to bump an old thread.

I have a culture that's been going strong about 3 years now.

Been wondering about drying it out in dehydrator and re-hydrating instead of storing fridge long term.

If you dehydrate please consider sending me, please

Sorry for a late response.

I just accidentally killed my starter (Scale died). I luckily a month back saved some starter and dehydrated it. So I'm currently reviving it, would you like some when it's vigorous?

Was suppose to bounce back 24 hours from dehydration according to the interwebs, but it's not doing crap!

in 2 weeks I should have it going again, there has to be some yeast left in there.

Nice, how long before it smelled correctly. I got some teeny bubbling action, but the scent is really far off.

Some people use clostridium to rise sourdough....
